Interesting it's on an 81/X suffix.....very late NA. Registered 08/08/81 with quite a late frame number so I emailed Honda about 3 weeks ago asking if they have a manufacture date. Had the standard answer of 2 to 6 weeks to check and let me know before I cross their palm with 30 notes!

So the tank is now off. The filler cap lock removed and will need new screws. Thinking of some stainless steel ones like these. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/202239228641I chucked a bit of paint stripper on. Rubbish really. If you leave it a couple of days it starts to work! You can just see the original colour of this tank starting to show. Pet cock off. Screen on its way out. And out. I think it will be ok to re-use. A little look at the rubber seal. Needs a replacement. This is the most obvious area of rust but I hope it will be ok after cleaning and treating. I've got some brick cleaner at the back of my building shed so will chuck that in and give it a try before spending out on the exotic stuff. It's only about £6 for 5L and I've read it works. The cap. The rubber seal is a bit cracked so a new on will be required. Are these available? Some research for later. The old fuel has a really strong smell to it but came out clean. Not a huge amount, maybe a litre.

It's good you were able to get those two ickle tank lock screws out Andy, sometimes they can be little buggers especially if Bodge it and Scarper have been there before you with his non-JIS screwdrivers.

They had a good soak with GT85 first as they were really rusty. I still have to take the smaller ones out of the locking flap, there having a soak too.

I have had a look and see he does the rubber for the locking flap too. I will change that too as it's cracked a bit. The little washer is from the petcock. I have done a quick search for one but can't find it yet. Maybe I am using the wrong words?

You are getting well stuck in there Andy. You may have already had a look, but I had the same problem with a seat pan a little while ago. Mine was a bit of a tea bag but it came back to life. I can see that yours has had a bit of metalwork, but they missed out on putting the teeth or tangs back. They make fitting the cover so much easier and much better than screws. The thing is the cushion attracts moisture, so anything that breaks the paint (Like a screw) will start rusting again soon. If you have a MIG welder then you are all set. This is how I fixed mine - hondasuperdream.co.uk/thread/647/250-repairGreat job posting all this btw.

This is how I fixed mine - hondasuperdream.co.uk/thread/647/250-repairGreat job posting all this btw. I remember reading your thread on this and said my 400NC seat pan was in a similar condition. I have seen some youtube videos where they have used this stuff. Cut and pop riveted on. I'm not sure about it but as I have two seat pans to do may well try it on one and see how it goes. I have patience to do as you have done to cut and weld individual pieces on and do think it's probably the best in the long run. You know, nowhere for the water to get behind and start rusting. I have mig, electric arc and gas but I got rid of my gas bottles a good few years ago as I wasn't using them. Hindsight says I should have kept them. I do like a good braze and have the kit to go on the arc to do that with and got good results with it. Thanks for the encouragement, I do appreciate it.

Many thanks. I have to say all you guys on here are top class gentlemen. The help offered and encouragement given is second to none. You're all willing to help and even donate. Just WOW. This doesn't happen on some of the other forums. Thank you all.

I tried in on a side panel, the one with a missing lug, and no damage to the panel at all. I wouldn't like to try the stuff that was available a few years ago on it. I'll invest in some decent stuff as there's a few bits that will need doing along the line.
