It may be the earlier seat pan, that has slightly heavier plating and slight curve out edges along each side? As it has the earlier seat securing brackets....

It is certainly heavier and made of thicker steel than the 400NC pan. I offered the cowl from it up to the 400 pan and it is wider. And yes, the brackets are different. Good spot!

I thought all the original seat pans were the same gauge steel, only difference is the duck tail style seat tail has some of the pan lopped away but not much.

Funnily enough I have just been measuring both the pans so I can choose some steel. The Pig is 1.0mm thick and the 400NC is 0.8mm. The Pig 400NC (marked 443P) Comparing in the flesh, the NC pan looks thinner to the eye and does feel lighter but there is a lot missing from it. On the Pig, both sides have had steel welded and there is more of it there.

That's interesting, thanks.
Are they both 100% original pans? If so, I wonder if Honda did it to save weight.

I hung each type on a approx. dial scale, to check I was not imagining it I can't remember exactly, but say 300g heavier or more both pans were in good order. So the NA one is lighter than the N, and the NB up, is the same construction as the NA, except for the change of shape.

Agree, very interesting, Always knew there were three seat styles for the CB250/400N but I too never thought there was ever any difference in actual weight between all three. Certainly the NA and NB-on seats always had more of a sculptured look so as well as the cover, I wonder if they also changed the foam from the first models? I guess they must have.

I haven't found any marking on The Pigs pan yet but the 400NC is marked 443P which would be correct. Probably changed to thinner steel to save a bit of money and maybe easier to press.

Top is The Pig, middle is my spare and the bottom is 400NC. You can see the difference in shape at the tail. The earlier foam does seem to be thicker, particularly at the front. It's difficult to show in a photo. This is the front of my spare (upside down) The front of 400NC. Thinner where it would fit up to the tank. The number underneath on my spare is illegible and was inked on. Nothing visible on The Pig. Underneath 400NC. 443P impressed into the foam when moulded.

Postie's been. Look what he brought. Many thanks Pete. One for the Pig, one for the NC and one spare.

I had a look through the plug holes and my 2 stroke mix with added redex has gone. Out with the dipstick and the oil there is now slightly thicker than water. From this I deduce my mix has got past the rings. The engine is still not free. It won't move in gear and the kickstart does not move unless the clutch lever is pulled in. So, off with the LH crankcase cover. Some rusty water came out when cracking the bolts, so I guessed what was coming. I did try turning it but it is solid. A strip down and rebuild was always on the cards, but it would have been nice to have it free and running beforehand.

Oh shit Andy 😳 that's bad news. For all I know you may be a world class engine builder, but I have done a few now and would be happy to help. It all depends on if the water sat in the crank case too. I have a crank and quite a few leftover bits. Good luck.
