This just happened to one of the bloke's on the BSA forum. Any thoughts on what may have caused it? Sometimes it's good to stay old school.

It be is common on end of life batteries Regularly happens on Laptop Batteries at work This has been one of the responses so far: "Yep, not happened to me but know exactly why. Not boasting but I lecture in electrical and mechanical engineering. Batteries being a specialism.
Sealed lead acid batteries will only tolerate a max charging voltage of 13.8 volts when fully charged as the catalyst cannot convert the oxygen and hydrogen gas back to water fast enough so pressure builds with your results.
You need to either
( a ) fit a convention battery
Or
( b ) replace the rectifier and Zener with a modern rectifier regulator unit."
