OK this is bike related, but not Superdream related, went out today for a ride on the 1000 Fireblade, obviously with the fine weather traffic in towns was heavy and as always the temp always shoots up to 103 before the fans kick in and cool it down, once underway temps drop down to normal, upon return I put the bike in the garage, closed the door and buggered off for some dinner, back to the garage and hour or so later and I find a puddle on the floor. Now this was my fault, the bike was hot, the temp in the garage was 30c and then I go stick the bike into this furance making it worse and pressurising the system, I don't think the fans kick in when the ignition is off, had a similar problem years ago and it turned out to be a weak rad cap so I'll be changing that again, but I would like to change the coolant to something better, so recommendations, anyone had any experience of the waterless coolant stuff?
And no, I won't be putting Beer into it 😁

I’ve heard Gin is a good substitute for Beer

I'v never tried the waterless stuff (its supposed to cure old triumph stags and they were a bit notorious) but any glycol based antifreeze mix should be pretty efficient. has it leaked through the header tank overflow?
on a similar note my old gpz900 was a bit notorious in town/slow moving traffic and a common mod to find on those is a manual fan switch. that bike was oddly wired from the factory as the fan only kicked in when you turned the ignition off

Only know of it's use on highly tuned turbo marine diesels, after some work on them, they would do tests and trials with de-min water then swap it out for the special stuff, when all was well... The manual fan switch sounds good, once fitted 45 seconds at tick over before put away, to average out the hot liquids in the engine core with the fan running, so to fall a few degrees, before switch off. Ramble;- The only liquid cooled bike I've had was a VT250FD, a rare event for it to get very hot round the middle of Edinburgh, the fan seemed quite happy to kick-in. The commuting route in the late 80's was dual carriage almost all the way (with the bulk traffic going in the opposite direction), with the days that I worried the coolant could freeze being the more memorable . When I stayed in Edinburgh 85/86/87 and one of my friends was back of the the rigs for two weeks at a time, after I did my 4.5 days the VT was put in the garage for most of the weekend, as he put a heavy priority on liquid refreshments! . Friday on Backshift, about 20:30 ish, 2 miles from the house, on the way into Edinburgh, a pit-stop for a Smoked Sausage Supper, and home, scrub, change and DISCO!

My shitty Suzuki Burgman runs hot even with a recently recored radiator at 21k miles,I put the correct coloured waterless coolant in ( blue I think ) seems to cool down quickly but not been riding in REALY hot temperatures, don’t recall ever having an issue with my CBR1000 ‘blade in the 8 years I owned it

Mine's never been a problem in 30k miles, it gets hot in traffic but the fans always kick in, 103c fan 1, 106c for fan 2, it's very rare that fan 2 kicks in, it was my fault for switching off when hot then sticking it in a hot garage and closing the door, but it does look like others have similar concerns and there is a well documented solution. www.cbrforum.com/forum/cbr-1000rr-13/custom-fan-switch-08-cbr1000rr-120811/Neat simple solution, doesn't interfere with ecu command's, gives me the option to run the 1 or both fans for a couple of minutes before stopping to bring the temp right down if I feel it necessary....or stop being a tight wad and buy another bike 🤔🍺

A quiet Sunday so took the 1000 to work to change the coolant and fit the override switch, sounds simple, but no, the fairing is a nightmare to remove, not very Honda at all, but after much swearing the job was complete and all is well Installing the switch is simple, ground wire and wires to both relays, and operates either one or both fans as required, no cutting of wires and the ecu still retains control under normal circumstances, the DPDT switch hides on the left side and is simple to operate but is nicely hidden Result, that deserves a beer 🍺
