It's interesting everyone's views on this. I got a mate who will argue til he's blue in the face that ethanol does no harm. We had some interesting chats at the pub before all this lockdown stuff about it. As an aside, how long do we think petrol will be available for? We all know its old tech in the long term but I for one would like to be shuffled off this mortal coil before I can finish riding my bikes.

Filled up my BSA with 91 in California about three hours ago.
Will my engine explode soon?

Just to add that 91 is the best stuff you can actually get here mainstream....I am told it is the 95 equivalent in the UK

If I am parking a bike (or anything) up for a while, I run the old fuel out and use AVGAS. Local flying club will sell it to you. Not cheap, but NO ethanol. Just don't mistake the AVTUR pump....bad news!

upto 5% at the moment, 10% is coming though. not sure if anything is happening with super unleaded, fingers crossed that stays ethanol free

E5 is everywhere I go for petrol, usually one of the supermarkets. So that would be 5%. When I ask the staff about the super unleaded they sell, they haven't got a clue about it. Even on the BP garage we have, they can't/won't help.
Quote from Hagerty's:
The Petrol Retailers Association says that there will be an advertising campaign six months before the launch of E10 to advise drivers of the difference between the fuels. They will also introduce a website where you can check if a car is compatible, while on the forecourts fuel pumps will be labelled with a warning.
The FBHVC website (https://www.fbhvc.co.uk/fuels#change) has some useful info including places selling leaded and corrosion inhibitor additives that they have endorsed after testing. Mind you, I don't know how up to date any of the info is.

just been doing a bit of reading on pure ethanol/methanol racing engines and a few interesting snippets seem relevant. the racers usually put a very short life span on plastic/rubber/painted components that ethanol comes into contact with to the point of stripping and flushing the fuel systems after a days racing and briefly running on petrol (I'd assume super unleaded) to preserve things like fuel lines, carb floats, intake rubbers etc. the ethanol allows much cooler running , hence you often see on ebay all aluminium barrels for C15's, B44's etc. it also allows much higher compression ratios to be run, around 14:1 seems to be the consensus the downside is that there simply isnt as much energy in ethanol as there is in the same amount of petrol, therefore they end increasing jet sizes by anything upto 200% to get the engines to perform at their optimum. it could be (ignition re mapping isnt really an option for our older bikes) that we end up going up a size on main jet (possibly pilot too) and carefully re setting the mixture screws? the pain here is it might not pass the emissions at MOT time for bikes that arent yet exempt.

You wanna change your mot tester, unless later Euro 5 vehicles have to be tested I’ve never known the engine be started or emission tested on any of my hikes

I didn't think the emissions were tested, just the 'noise' test which is subjective, if the MOT tester thinks it's too loud or not.
