Doesn’t look right on any post 1973 bike, around 1970 the yellow reflective plates were made available and everyone wanted one of them and dumped the black plates

For me its not the black plate bit
On an SD you expect the dealer logo/details on the bottom of the plate - these pressed plates don't have it
If I am being honest a black plate on the RE would look wrong
My view is yellow but the black plates look great on my C15 and 3TA

The choice has gone now plates have to be yellow since early this year which is a pity as I think black plates would have suited the CM

Up to the individual owner what plate is on their bike but I wouldn’t bung one on any post ‘73 bike😁. I have an illegal small plate on one of my bikes I must admit🙀

They have closed that loophole that said you can use black/silver/white on historic vehicles. Now they say you can only have them IF you already had them fitted when they closed it. So anything that now becomes historic cannot have the old colours and needs be reflective. How they would know what you had between 1973 and 2021 beats me. Number plate makers would still sell them to you as they would sell them as a 'sign' or for off road use, display, etc. That's what we used to do when making them.

Would these young breed of new coppers honestly pull you for it though? Half of them are clueless when it comes to ages of vintage vehicles and understanding the old registration system.

I could be wrong but I don't think the 'Panda' cars have the equipment to check the plate. It's the unmarked and patrol cars that have this. Even then, they are checking for insurance, etc and not the colour or size of your plate. Let's face it, they don't pull up those tearing around on e-scooters even though they are illegal in most places in the UK. Those riders go around without a care in the world!
