Is this museum open to the public? All jokes aside, I don't tell too many people and the showroom is well out of view from the general public, I would hate to get up one morning to find I had been broken into and had any of my bikes stolen. I had a TDR stolen at a previous address and I believe that the fact that the garage door was often open in the day whilst I worked on things that a unwanted individual saw the bike and returned on the evening to take it away, you never know who's watching. So keep them well locked away guys. I've started to get bit jittery about mine as they are accessed from down a side road leading into a field. Just put a couple of cameras up on approach to shed. More of a deterrent hopefully and I don't leave them outside more than I have to.

the family had (yet another) a quad bike stolen last night (lots of wind noise to cover the b*st*rds) so just been out and bought another padlock and chained a couple of mine together. its for this reason I hate windy nights

I know over polishing isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but I like a bit of bling 😎

You seem quite good at that. I'm just finishing this off and you are not too far from me. Have you got a spare 10 minutes ?

Of course he has.
P.S can you pick up my tank when you are there? He has a landing pad so you might have to take the chopper rather than the glider.

I have to confess I did not do the polishing on this occasion, Lincoln Alloy Polishers were used, unfortunately I am unable to get a mirror finish, I can get it close but it takes many hours. As this is my last sd project I thought I’d let Rick at Lincoln do a proper job 😃

Bad news to report I'm afraid. DNW is complete apart from a few minor items. So it was time to fire her up and take for a test ride. I had turned the engine over without starting to see if it had good oil pressure and all was good this was when I first got the engine in the frame. So I fitted a 2:1 loosely and started her for the first time and I though all was good all be it that it was loud as the exhaust had no gaskets. However now the 2:2 is fitted with all gaskets the exhaust note is much quieter I got the bad noise, there was a metallic noise which I suspected was piston hitting valves (surely not). So I decided to get the cam cover off and set the valve clearances. And to my horror see the photo

ouch! do you have any history on that engine carl? looks a bit like stevie wonder built it, I'd hazard a guess that somebody didnt get the valve collets seated correctly (all the others need checking if the heads salvageable), they got the bolts in the wrong order (copper washers on the centre 4 bolts, but you know that) and they've saved a bit (possibly two) in missing the retaining clips for the rocker dowels.
can you tell if the valve itself is broken? I think I have a spare 250 head if you need one.

I think I have a spare 250 head if you need one. No history on the engine, I wonder if the collets were ever fitted? Yes I noted the retaining clips it’s only missing on this side. Valves not broken or bent so I think the piston would just keep nocking it up into its seat. If the collets were fitted and fell out (unlikely) were would you suspect to find them now, they must have fallen down the cam chain tunnel if they were fitted, any suggestions to find them without completed stripping the engine, I have a spare head, thanks for the offer 👍

sounds like good (ish) news if the valves not broken or bent, as you said lets hope its just been lifting up and down the guide stem. the heads got to come off no matter what so I'd do that first, when you get the cam out then you can get at all the nooks and crannies in the head with a telescopic magnet and fingers crossed you find the collets. also with head off you can look down the cam chain tunnel with a torch (maybe rock it back and forth a tooth at a time and fish with the magnet at the same time) if none of that turns the collets up then its clutch cover off and have a fish round in the sump, fingers crossed you find them

I think the same person has been in that engine as had been in my green CM400T last year.
So many people out there who are 'expert' engine builders it would seem (not). It sends a shiver down't spine.

Hopefully more good news see photos below. I have looked down the cam chain tunnel and no sign of the collets, my view is if the collets had gone down the engine surely it would lock/jamb the engine? Your opinions would be appreciated. Looking at the cylinder bores I think this may be a low mileage engine, but who knows. Note the spark plugs 😱, I’ll let you know if they are different when I take them out.
