A brief history: Started n Doncaster in the ’70s, of all places. Founded by Yorkshire brothers Martyn and Paul Carnell in 1975 with its base in Marshgate, by the mid-1980s the operation had grown into three outlets, selling both bikes and cars. Then, progressively, it took off and went nationwide. By the mid-90s the number of outlets had risen to 14 – 10 car and four bikes then, in 1997, it went turbo after being bought by Dixons Motors, a large Yorkshire-based car retailer for a reported £12.4million. Under Dixon ownership (although the Carnell brothers stayed on under the deal for two more years) Carnell opened nine more bike dealers up to July 2000 and also a mail order business via a catalogue – Carnell’s Big Bike Book. Soon after things started to go wrong. The “stack ’em high, sell ’em cheap” approach had already resulted in a damning reputation for aftersales which management repeatedly attempted to address. One scheme in 2001 meant no staff were allowed to go home until all that day’s calls had been responded to.

I remember going to, I think, Motorcycle City, probably summer 1984(or85), at North Camp, star of the show was the RD500LC..... There still seems to be motorcycle dealers in the area, can't get my bearings, as the burger stall, with alcohol absorbing products is not shown . (not driving that week, classroom stuff )

Snap John. Aldershot very close to Reading where I grew up and around 1997 me an a mate went there, it was indeed a Motorcycle City. I recall they had one of the first Monster 600 Darks I'd ever seen with the black matt paintjob and yellow trellis frame and wheels (one of which I later owned).

Me and a few mates would ride to the Birmingham and Milton Keynes Carnell stores late ‘90s free go’s on the TT race bike games😁 I’d even treat the first Mrs.DFS and the kids to a visit 😂 Remember trying a Mick Doohan Repsol replica jacket on and the sales girl said to the said first wife “ wow he looks just like Mick Doohan” and she replied who’s he never heard of him very embarrassing I bought a Dainese two piece suit instead I’d gone there with view to buying a Kawasaki 800 cruiser but they wouldn’t give test rides😡

I was asked to recreate a Carnell plate from the 80s by a member who sent me a photo of his plate - the image was distorted so was going to be a challenge I then saw this plate at Hoar Park Used my I-Phone to scan this Imported it into paint and then pixel by pixel over drew it, 10 hours later This is it inserted to Publisher with a dummy registration and the print alignment marks - Just ned to put in the correct registration now and it can go to the number plate printer
And in Yellow (ignore the slight shade difference it wont be on the printed plate)

Exemplary work.
The recipient I’m sure will be chuffed to nuts with that. 👍
