My lad has to find work experience for July, something I never had to do in school. He has been finding is difficult to get a placement with most companies not even replying to his emails or just getting the brush off saying due to health and safety blah blah blah... But it looks like he has secured a placement here: I hope (think) he will enjoy it there. He seemed quite excited when he learned they did restorations!

Fair play to your lad, sounds exciting. It is crazy though that firms are scared to take on people due to health and safety demands and the fear of getting sued. Something wrong there.

i suppose the "health and safety" crap is fueled by our sueing culture !

probably down to company insurance but I suppose that in itself will be down to elf'n'safety. glad your lads got his placement, I really enjoyed mine (back in 1989 ) I still reckon I learnt more in that week than I did in my final years at school.

Insurance can be a problem. When I had shops, I used to get the work experience people call by and ask if I would be willing to take kids. I was but on checking my insurance found it would only cover 16+ age for workers. I called the company and asked about works experience and they said I would not be covered. The works experience folk said you need the insurance to be able to take the kids and what they are finding is it is getting more difficult to find small businesses that can afford the extra cost for what is essentially a very short time.
I'm led to believe that the kids have to go through a H&S induction at the placement, which is good for them. There are quite a few immature 15 year olds out there and a fair few adults!

He heard back today that his time will be split 60% on the retail side and 40% in the workshop. I know they have quite a successful ebay shop and he's quite familiar with mine so that won't be a problem for him to understand. I get him listing stuff for me, printing invoices and shipping labels etc. He also helped out when I had the bricks and mortar shops.
Roll on the middle of June!
