What's forum members stance on test rides when you are selling a bike privately? Would you let a potential buyer ride your bike pre-sale? Had a situation where my sister recently sold her KTM and she refused to let the person ride the bike so that buyer walked away?? Next viewer bought the bike without even asking. Just wondering what you would do and would you expect a ride if you were a potential buyer, cheers.

Full asking price in cash secures a test ride. Oh, and proof of insurance, otherwise the plod will be asking you for the release fee..... I think most people know that rule. When I ran a restoration workshop people sometimes wanted to pay with a cheque and take the car (as we were friends).. My answer was always that I didn't want to get into that habit as one day someone's cheque will bounce. Not "your" cheque naturally, but you wouldn't want that to happen to me anyway...because we're friends, right ?

I was of the opinion that if I got the cash in my hand they could have a go but I once got paid in a load of bent notes . so now its no test ride and bank transfer, if the buyer doesnt like it I'll find another

Buying, on the bank transfer I normally put the reference as the Reg No., and also send a small payment / deposit until the transfer is confirmed successful. Good that they shall match the name on the account receiving now... did two SD's and a Giant that way so far...

Good that they shall match the name on the account receiving now... did two SD's and a Giant that way so far... I think most genuine sellers would be happy with a small amount (micro deposit?) being paid in to check it all is legit before a larger holding deposit is paid. I know I would be. Then if you are collecting in person you can use the mobile banking app to pay the rest when you get there. The test ride is the harder bit. I have a large enough garden to at least go through two or three gears but would be reluctant to let someone ride off down the street. I've bought cars and had the seller actually bring them to me to look at and have a little drive with them around the area before giving the cash. They always want cash.

The kicker I got last year paid £50 by bank transfer, then done the rest with the banking app when picking up. (his wife confirmed it had gone in the account ok ). When I bought the NC, quite a few years back now, the guy rode it down here, so I did not look to close. appeared to be ok until dug deeper , the re-assembly after powder coating left a lot to be desired, still, nearly all corrected now. Did that by bank transfer, then ran the guy back to his cottage.... Not keen on giving test drives, just be my luck that they had a dodgy ins cert, and an ANPR at that moment, would be to much risk to the priceless hobby...

I think this kind of thing is more expected over here in California than it is in the UK from my experience of buying and selling at least a few bikes in both locations now. I have often declined the request (only once I allowed it when I had full trust in the person in front of me, they were also a friend of a friend) instead, offering to ride up and down the street in front of the buyer so that he/she can hear and see the bike is physically performing as it should.
So I have to admit, even with 'cash in hand' I would still be uncomfortable about the whole situation if something were to happen. So my take is that it's generally a no no, purely due to the potential legalities involved.
On the flip side, I also don't expect it as a buyer. If it is offered then of course, I will take the seller up on that offer. This has happened a few times but that said, I have always made sure the seller has my car keys and is always in full view of what I am doing, taken it within his area of view.

I sold a caravan at start of covid lockdown to a couple of 🍛🗝s ,cash was offered but I declined saying too much to accept and check not counterfeits and only a bank transfer would do.They turned up with cash regardless but I wouldn’t take it instead we went to my building society and they paid the money in then I followed and it was transferred into my account, all well untill few weeks later I had my account frozen and I was suspected of money laundering 🙀 ffs sorted after 4 days
