well one of us has to be crazy and I think its usually me. the idea occurred to me a while back (when Anna was having stator issues) that I could fit a later cb450s stator/cdi to the earlier cb400n. the main advantage being that brand new stators are available (from the states, search cmx450) and they are about half the cost of having a 400n stator fully reconditioned. so with enough kit and caboodle purchased I set about bolting bits on to a handy 250 engine (must finish building that too), the windings fit nicely same screw holes etc so no problem, ditto the pickup. I then offered the mag wheel up to the crank and found honda had altered the taper on the later cranks, its quite a bit bigger, B*gg*r. so bought some suitable sized CDS tube and set about making an adapter. take one erm... take two, this one might have legs as I'v now got a better method of forming it oh how I'd love a nice press and take three, so the groove is nowhere near (it would be nice if it held the new woodruff key) but the taper is good so, bolted on to an old 250 crank and set up to check truth, hooray its good. theres no run out that I can see, it really does look to be running beautifully. I'm now convinced this idea has legs, so new woodruff key on order

more research (my new phone means I can get on cms again)
the cb350s stator is the same as cb450s
the cb350s cdi is the same as cb450s
the cb350s coil is the same as cb450s (its needed for this conversion as its higher resistance than an SD item)
at the time of writing there are cb350s stators, mag wheels and pickups on ebay for peanuts when compared to prices for a 400n stator

take two revisited (on the right) a bit more thought on my behalf, if I'd employed my brain yesterday then I'd have realised that a small clearance is needed around the woodruff key as its only there to ensure the position of the mag wheel is correct, once tightened onto the taper its that 'elastic' force that holds the mag wheel in position, the clearance should allow the adapter to compress fully and therefore sit correctly. this is a very long winded way of saying that it will need careful fitting with the new woodruff key to ensure it does not cock over but should be easily do-able. take two also gives me a component that I can use for measurements and copy fairly easily

I'v run into a snag with this, I reckon I can fit the stator and wire it in no problem but the 400 SD's advance curve is a very rare thing, the starting point 15 degrees BTDC is normal enough but full advance is 43 degrees and not many bikes advance that far. so the problem with this conversion is its going to need a suitable cdi. secondhand from germany are about 150euro and cb350s ones are very thin on the ground . so I'll keep my eyes open for a suitable cdi, if only to prove to myself that this conversion works. as a separate idea I'm now wondering if I could simply wire in a cheapo £20 cdi from a gsxr400?

Build it. Try it. See what happens.
Still a favourite saying of mine from my electronics tutor. He always said it's the best way to learn. We had quite a few 'explosions' but it was great fun!

so I'm not brave enough to ditch the old system yet, so I made up (bodged together) some wires so that the new cdi can be easily connected into the existing system. it changes from standard to gsxr with nothing more complicated than a 13mm spanner. if this works I'll make up some wiring for it properly but for now crimps should be fine to test my insanity the only wire I'll keep (if it works) is the main live feed, as I soldered that connection in the headlight, jointed in to the (black) switched live from the ignition switch.

so how hard can it be? turns out harder than I thought and I'm rapidly running out of 15amp glass fuses... problem is the cdi (cheapo) that I bought doesnt appear to fit any of the wiring looms (pics on ebay, its a science ) for the model fitment list and it doesnt wire up as per random image off the net (hence no more fuses). more thought required

so the cdi that they sent (probably fried now ) and after looking at wiring looms for the models its supposed to fit? looks like the wrong cdi to me, but I'm no expert on suzuki electronics, or any others for that matter. I think I need the six and four pole type

should have researched the gsxr cdi a bit better than I did, its a multi point pickup system, oops however, I'v emailed a couple of questions to these guys (just to see if it will go as high as 43 degrees advance) and I'm waiting to hear back from them. seems a really well specced bit of kit and theres good clear info on how to wire it etc cdi-shop.de/en/shop/honda-dominator-nx500-pd08/cdi650-p2also has some really neat features, the voltage range that its capable of working at and the built in failsafe protection could possibly make this well worth the money

it would appear I'm not the only person to think this way, just had this wiring diagram back from ignitech, the units are not cheap but they are fully programmable and so long as your pickups are ok they should work fine. still waiting to hear back from our deutsch cousins at cdi shop but I'v just found a different email address for them so fingers crossed I'll get a reply, that unit is considerably cheaper but still seems well specced and hopefully well made

the german company finally got back to me (now that I'v ordered an ignitec cdi) so it appears it will work, the only fly in the ointment is the 400 SD has a double pickup system and it would be much simpler to change this (HALL sensor) to a single pickup, there are aftermarket ones available that will bolt straight on for little money. so eventually I'll try this system too compare them back to back (hopefully)
