I'v just remembered how much I hate windows as an operating system, no wonder nothing in the modern world works properly having shunned windoze over 10 years ago [ i use arch linux, without a gui desktop ] i can understand your pain...i read the other day in order to run their latest offering in windoze 11, you need a state of the art laptop/computer if it dosnt meet certain critria, you cant use it...how anal is that.. hail arch linux !

sheer cost of this cdi means a take no chances approach to the wiring, so no nasty crimps, everything soldered and sleeved with heat shrink I'v tried as much as I can to keep the colours on the bike the same for easy reference as to whats what. I think I'll also order a new coil as it seems daft to rely on an old one with this nice new box of tricks. all wired and wrapped ready to simply plug in, must pick up a 10 amp fuse from somewhere

more slightly random information, this snippet is from the cb350sg/cb450sg manual, I'm guessing that the newer (better) piston crown probably allows a couple of extra degrees of advance?

The PC I've just assembled, was to be potentially W11 compliant, but the more I watch on Youtube etc I'm not going to install directly, as this TPM "security" thingy is heading towards them saying, if you install W11, they will restrict what you can run on your own hardware! Not much use to run unapproved code to program CDIs and the like, if that happens. So the hardware is now done, so I'm now looking at either running only virtual machines on it via Proxmax, or a linux host and VMs on that (more likely)....But I've only dabbled with Linux, need a GUI, and a Document with popular command lines to cut and paste . Probably Linux Mint...(zorin / SUSE??), most applications I use, run on Linux anyway, just getting used to the different appearance. My win 10 FX6300 based winter 2017/18 build is still fine, but the new one is to last 2023 to end of 2027, and is an upgrade of about 100%+ I've run Linux Mint 19.2 via a USB boot and it seams comfortable on the new hardware...

When it comes to Linux, I've only ever used Ubuntu. I think there's two different forms of mint, one based on Debian like Ubuntu. I have read mint is a little easier for beginners and runs quicker on older machines. Ubuntu is pretty easy to use though and looks so much cleaner compared to windows.

allow me to introduce the worlds most evil man cant get this bloody notebook online for love nor money, the windows solution? it tells you to go online to solve the problem so now I have to buy an external disc drive (that doesnt need drivers to install it) so that I can install a usb wifi thingy so that I can get a connection, if I ever meet the worlds most evil man I'm going to install windows somewhere extremely uncomfortable for him within his person by the way have I mentioned how much I detest windows?

thought I'd got all the kit to program this bl**dy thing, so plugged it in and powered it up (it needs a 12v supply to be programmed) and guess what? the cable I bought wont communicate with it . I am at this point about ready to break down in tears, how can windows be so inept as a system? so now ordered an old fashioned RS232 male to male cable to try and get the cdi and computer to talk to each other, I'm not holding my breath...

so the old fashioned 9 pin to 9 pin cable arrived, problem is the computer (it turns out) actually has a 15 pin connector so ordered another cable www.ebay.co.uk/itm/353196990745?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2648and finally I can connect the laptop to the cdi, the slight downside is this cable is only 200mm long and the cdi needs to be powered in order to be programmed. the programming itself is really fast and easy, simply enter all relevant settings and click programme, as a double check you can then click read and it displays the current programme in the cdi.

so its up and running, it had a blip at around 3000rpm on the old ignition set up and its still there on this one. being at such low revs I'm suspecting carbs (again) it might help if I put that metal gauze thing back in the airbox so I'll give that a go (not holding my breath on that one) if that does nothing then I'll have another look at the pilot circuit, I have my suspicions about those rubber plugs possibly allowing some fuel past... next crackpot idea (cos I never know when to leave well alone ) is to try a cb450s pickup (single and therefore simpler than the twin unit) and pair this up with a dyna coil/leads. I'm then thinking I might be able to bump the advance up to a full 45 degrees (super unleaded only for that). I'll probably also swap over to cb450s alternator as I'll keep the stator as a spare for the 400 kicker restoration

so a bit more tweaking and meddling, fitted the cb450s stator windings (just used for charging the battery) and fitted the cb450s pickup (bolts straight on, only mod needed shorter flange head bolts) these are both running with the standard hitachi mag wheel. also fitted a cb450s rectifier just in case the SD one isnt up to coping with the higher output (reminder to self, check its charging ). then tweaked the ignition curve a bit, the flat spots still there when cold but almost vanishes completely when warmed up (must put that gauze thing back in the airbox). according to ignitech's website getting the base advance right lets the rest of the advance curve perform at its best, so any more tweaks that I make now will be a degree at a time on the base advance. new curve in red, old in faint blue

so in the interests of meddling (its a disease ) I'v now ordered one of these this type seems easier to wire up and possibly use, also you can simply order one (and any other gubbins like connector blocks) direct from the website. the ignitech system requires emails and phone calls, its a bit difficult when I dont have international calls on my phone plan. theres no set up for the SD on this system (I'll have to do it myself) I also reckon I can use the side stand monitoring to get the handlebar kill switch to work...
