so scanning around I came across this www.ebay.co.uk/itm/134095676621?hash=item1f38b9a4cd:g:2iEAAOSwq9piZCh1but I really shouldnt buy another bike at the mo. so instead I did some more reading on superdream ignition conversions and came across a guy who is running an aftermarket programable cdi. www.ignitech.cz/en/vyrobky/dccdip2/dccdip2.htmall this needs in order to work (if I'm understanding it right) is a signal from the outer pickup on the stator and reliable charge going into the battery, the rest of the expensive and over complicated ignition coils/advance coil etc would become redundant (400/450 models). the only slight downside is it has to be programmed on a laptop (nick might throw me off the forum for using language like that ) so as long as your pickup is working this should be a simple enough replacement. something else expensive for me to try, more expensive than you might think as I dont own a laptop

the 400/450 models are an unbelievably expensive repair, to do the whole unit (advance coil, pickup, source coils and charging coils) would be well in excess of £400 and then ask yourself would you pair that up with a 40 year old cdi? so probably another £100+ for a new cdi unit. I'm just interested to see if theres another way

Get the VT Paul. Old bikes are good fun and if they need to be seduced by a laptop to give them a boost, I am okay with that, just don't fit fuel injection an ECU and engine management lights.

I wouldnt dream of such things as fuel injection (well maybe on a turbo ) etc but I do admit I quite fancy an adjustable advance curve, could be something else to mess with if I ever get the cafe racer together...

this looks like it could be useful as a starting point for programming the advance curve
