Happy new year everyone. So, new year, new project. I know, I should finish the first one before starting on another. The other thread title is 2 kickers, so I have been looking at the second one as the first is nearing completion. I thought a new thread would be better than complicating the original one. I was thinking of just giving it a tart up to make it acceptable for daily use, but every time I look at it now I see something else that needs doing. A quick recap, I bought it just as spares for the first one, but just couldn't bring myself to break an S reg kicker' on purchase it looked like this, wrong tank and tail unit, cut down rear mudguard, no carbs, tiny winkers (fronts drilled into the fork ears), mounts cut off the grab rails, dream rear wheel, pattern front muddy, motad 2 into 1 system......the list goes on. like many others here, I was assured "it was running fine recently, but there is just a problem with the carbs", I fitted a spare set of carbs and funnily enough there was another problem. after some fault finding, and the purchase of half an engine to get a new stator, the bike fired up and ran well. so far I have :- Fitted new carbs Replaced the stator replaced the Dream rear wheel fitted a new rear mudguard sourced replacement seat, tail unit and tank Today it looks like this. Not pretty, but it runs. I will now start accumulating the list of parts I am going to need for this bike, while finishing off the first one.

you are going nowhere Duffer, I have a long way to go to catch you up. This is therapy for me and I need as many therapists around as possible. I suspect I might need your help on this one. What's the furthest north you have ever flown?

Steve, I just read your latest post. I sympathise completely, no one will ever see the work you have done.
I also just spent the day swearing in the garage getting 4 indicators to work, started with just 1 on but not flashing. Then both left flashing, finally traced the last fault to a high resistance crimp in the tail loom. Now have all 4 working, very satisfied.

Ok, first bike is (nearly) finished. I decided it was time to tear down this one. I promise less posts this time and it won't take 3 years to get it done. no major surprises lurking that I have found so far. main stand is a bit dodgy, not rusted, but has been in the wars. Upper shock mounts were ...er shocking. fell apart when I tried to remove them. swing arm pivot bushes were stuck fast and got destroyed by me during removal I'll get the frame off to the powder coaters and start from there.

Just waiting for my frame and other parts to get back from the powdercoater. Meanwhile, I picked up a brand new complete exhaust system along with a load of other new parts. Saved myself a lot of cash. WARNING
Purists should look away now.

That is not a project, it is a collection of brand new parts for my kicker.
Seriously, the builder gave up near completion. he started with a bare frame and bought everything. I was initially dubious of the 'new parts' story, but the seller was an honest man.
it came with :- rebuilt engine Rebuilt carbs and a spare set rebuilt caliper / pins / piston / bolts / pads new exhaust system /silencers / collector box / downpipes new wheel bearings new cush rubbers new tyres new fork tube / seals etc. new battery
the list goes on and on.
Now that I have dismantled the bike I can verify that the parts were new. the bike came with a huge pile of receipts for the parts, mostly from silvers. that is an eyewatering cost when added up. I'm glad I didn't keep my receipts for the last build!

Finally got the frame back from the powder coaters. couldn't wait to crack on, made some progress right away. new head bearings, new shocks, new bushes for shocks and swingarm pivot. The freshly rebuilt Forks from the bike above cleaned up nicely, once I got all of the horrible black paint off. They just need a couple of dust covers before fitting. I did buy a new rear mudguard, but the old one doesn't look bad now I cleaned it up and painted it.

Today I started to dismantle the engine top end, mainly due to this - it came apart fairly easily, everything looks OK, so far. very little carbon build up anywhere, almost clean after a wipe with a rag. The bores are in good shape, can still see some hone marks, the rings are all free and the pistons look good. it looks like someone was in here not too long ago. The only defect I have found so far is a dented dowel from the top of the head (and the broken fin which I knew about already). Now To start cleaning up and getting the head and barrels ready for new gaskets.

Time for a minor rant. I did this earlier but it has been bugging me. When I went to drain the oil from this engine, the oil drain plug was rather tight. when I say rather tight, I mean it must have been fitted using a scaffold pole as an extension. see below for the state of the sealing washer when I finally got it out, it was welded to the drain plug bolt. I wound up using a 2 foot breaker bar and holding my breath waiting for the lower case to fracture, luckily it came out without any damage. I wonder how many have been scrapped due to this?
