interesting stuff Andy, I confess I had a look on the interweb and found a wiki article on them. spondon did the frames and only 138 of the final model were ever made, they were losing £200 on every bike sold in the end

Not surprised they ended up losing on the bikes. What would that £200 be in today's prices? What's would the cost of the bike even be?

£829 for a honda cb400t in 1978 so that gives some comparison

Just looked on wiki... £1355 it says it cost. I guess that was when it was first released, 1975. The book page I added was from 1977 so probably was a tad more by then. So if they were losing £200 on each, did it cost them nearly £1600 to make? Almost twice what you could buy a 400T for?

it had some very expensive sounding features, based loosely on an old scott flying squirrel engine but with massively modified barrels, intakes and a complicated crank flow system. it also had a really complex sounding oil feeder (supposed to be very safe on a closed throttle) I hazard a guess that the gas type shut off valve that you can just see in the pic is something to do with that

Wonder what the ownership experience is like in 2023? Are parts out there?

Tried to work out how much it would be today based on the selling price in 1976 and gave up. Too much of a headache! So I cheated, asked google and it came up with this: £100 in 1976 is equivalent in purchasing power to about £920.91 today, an increase of £820.91 over 47 years. The pound had an average inflation rate of 4.84% per year between 1976 and today, producing a cumulative price increase of 820.91%.
This means that today's prices are 9.21 times as high as average prices since 1976, according to the Office for National Statistics composite price index. A pound today only buys 10.859% of what it could buy back then.
So that would make it £12479.55 in todays money. But as the pound only buys about a tenth of what it could, would that make it have a selling price of £124795.50 Wouldn't it be great to own and ride it though!

Yes I remember the Silk being launched, expensive compared to modern new Japanese bikes,George Silks dream but it didn’t sell well using 70 year old tech engines.Scotts were good bikes in the day and a guy name Holder bought the name/company ( he bought a lot of old names ) and made a few bikes too but the Silk was more modern.

Were these things on a parr with Hesketh or would you say more luxurious?
