Been fitting the wiring, and all not too bad. Right up to the bit where I found the oil pressure wire not screwed on. Yes, it had new oil in it. Yes, the clutch cover had a nice new gasket. Yes, I kicked the wall and said rude words. When will I ever learn. Hope to be adding some fuel and lectric soon to see if it lives š š

Coming along quite nicely. I'm looking forward to seeing the end result. It's giving me a few ideas for the future.

Thought I would offer an update on this project. First, the name needs to temporarily change to The 250 Rat. The 400 engine has a few issues. I think that even though I did not remove the con rods, someone did, and refitted them the wrong way around . I also need decent ignition parts, so for now I have used a spare 250 engine which I rebuilt from bits, so that I can at least continue while I re-think the 400 question. The engine swap was done in one evening, so it would be no big deal swapping back. The other thing I did was to prop up the phone and film the second fire up. I should say that this engine was a "crank out and new shell bearings" job. the carbs were also rebuilt. the first fire up was to prove that I had (as always) wired the plugs up the wrong way around and it just popped a bit. So I swapped em, propped up the camera and got this - youtu.be/5Fw3hqIxSwY The exhaust on there is a Motad with no gaskets at the head, just to fire up with. I have now found a couple of headers which will fit 2-1 and ordered a Y section. On the end of that, I am thinking of this- www.classicbikeshop.co.uk/revus-roadhawk-universal-kick-up-slash-cut-silencer.htmlWith the gold exhaust wrap over the (tatty) headers and Y section. Front mudguard is a reclaimed fibreglass number, painted matt black. The rear, I have ordered a Ā£12.99 Steel matt black "front" mudguard, that I will cut a bit, weld a bit and then repaint as the front. Last night I started to fix the tank in position. So the rear mount has been made and the front lugs removed ready to be welded back in place a bit further back. The the seat needs a brace bar and a couple of brackets. The wiring all works and I have a nice little LED rear light and indicator (all in one) unit to pop on the new rear mudguard. It is MUCH quicker to rebuild a standard bike !

I've got to say that this bike is coming together nicely and is a far, far better looking bike than that turquoise thing on ebay (now at Ā£520 with 4 days left!).

I think what makes this a bit special is the decision not to use an SD tank
That tank just flows with the bike

Thatās the thing, the euro style tanks were never designed to be used on cafe racers, so totally in agreement on that.

if you can get both plugs roughly to the same side you might be able to see if they are both sparking at exactly the same time. that could be the problem (one cylinder on its firing stroke, the other on its induction) so they should spark in a staggered way. do the indicators flash? or do they just all light up continuously?

I will give the plugs a go. Fully expected to blow myself to the other side of the shed doing that though!Always very unlucky with lectric ā Indicators flash.
