it sounds like its maybe warped the head then for some reason. it once happened to me on my 400/4, the guy who rebuilt the engine put fully synthetic oil in, I changed it for part synthetic and the head just curled like a banana, always did my own engines after that

In your picture of the head, there seems to be some guite deep "marks" on the gasket surface on the right, and maybe they have been "removed" on the left ?
If skimming the head don't forget the dowels may be too "long" as a result ?

Thanks for the pointers Buster. New engine fitted and running. Bit quiter than the first one too. I will give it a gentle run in and check the head bolts for torque from time to time. So far no leaks or puffing from bad places 👍 Will have the first one fixed soon too, just fit it in something else.

Thank you gentlemen for your help on this one. Just to report progress, I have had the head skimmed. Local company, Crewe Engines. Called them yesterday, dropped both the cylinder and head off this morning at 8.30, picked them up at 1.00 job done and just £35 plus the VAT. Head skimmed, cylinder head checked (Fine). I thought that was good service and worth a mention. They are able to do that job while you wait if needed too. Leak now you bastard.

WOW - Looks a great job Its all about knowing where to go I can't claim I knew what they were like, just got lucky. Turns out they specialise in Mercedes. Mind you, back in the old days this job would have been smuggled into Rolls Royce in a BIG butty box. Twenty Benson and Hedges and a box of Tetley later,,,same result !

Just been out to add a few running in miles to the Rat. Not leaking, running quite well, just takes a moment to pick up when the throttle is opened (a bit flat) and I am not certain what needs adjusting on the carbs to cure it. Other than that, not to shabby, ,,,,,, well it is, but its supposed to look like this. Lord Beer is quite correct about the weather too. Just after I took this we had a hail storm ? Piggin May !!

its looking good, is that running the 250 motor or the 400?

It's the 250.the first one that I rebuilt due to a missing engine number. The 400 is missing a stator, flywheel and cdi. Not leaking now so the skimming worked.
