Well here goes, most of you remember my old yellow 250 (which I loved) but due to certain life circumstances I had little choice but to sell it on.
Fast forward a couple years I was starting to look for another one, however life doesn't always go to plan and I had a stroke (at 35 years old) and it didn't happen.
So nearly 3 years since that I got to the point where I'd recovered enough to be able to ride again, so had several bikes that just didn't suit and the decision was made to get looking for another superdream.
I stumbled across this one with 6k miles showing on the clock, came with loads of spares and some NOS parts.
So £750 later I ended up with it, now some might say I paid to much but I was happy with the price.
So first job being as it hadn't been taxed since 1992 was to see if it would even run, so carbs off and clean (or so I thought) but it turned out the inside of the carbs was a mess and one of the float pin towers broke off, that combined with the fact that the inlet rubbers were junk I set off in search on a set of carbs and rubbers.
A nice chap on Facebook sold me a set that he'd kept as spares and even threw in a set of good used inlets.
By this point I'd already put some oil down the bores and let it sit a while, spun the engine over and checked for spark.
Carbs arrived, chap I had them from said they had never been run on his bike and I confirmed this because even though they were fairly clean and usable, they were not assembled correctly at all.
The floats were in upside down the mixture screw springs and washers were wrong and one was missing a spring from the main float,so made one good set out of the two
Anyways fitted them and it fired into life and ran well, whether or not the miles in the clock are to be believed the engine ran very well and was quiet, not rattly or tappy.
Now I'm just waiting on the shed to be delivered this week then I can crack on with the build, still unsure if I'm gonna go down the full restoration route or more of a light resto but a clean survivor look.
Eaither way I will record my ramblings here and add photos as and when I take them.
the old sd
the new (to me) 1979 250
more to follow, i can say this build wont be one for the purists, it wont be a chop or a cafe racer but neither will it be a factory resto.
im currently striping it ready to start the process of refurbing parts and rebuilding can begin.
