I think the GSX was the nearest match to the SD, really nice engine, smooth turbine like power delivery, not so many lasted the course it seems, though I don't know how many sold in the UK.
MODEL Max Speed KPH NOTES
250N 146 4 stroke
GSX250 145 4 stroke
I presume the GSX 400 would be a similar match to a 400N, but never actually rode one...

So that little debate I was going on about the other night was about the 250 and how supposedly gutless it is against other bikes of the era.....and indeed so against the 400 version. It still beggars belief that 40 years on, some people continue to play this same old tune......and still continue to miss the whole reason the 250N existed in the first place. So for those hard of hearing, here it is again in a simple nutshell: This bike was produced to give young learners at the time the feel of a big bike but with a sleeved down engine. It was never designed to be a performance model for this very reason. You could ride upto 250 on L plates back then and the Superdream for me had it all i.e. looks, performance , comfort and reliability and still does as far as I’m concerned , great bikes for the bucks 🤟

It’s good for us that appreciate the Superdream that they’re looked upon as gutless rubbish by the “experts” out there making them affordable

I've just had a wee look at the 1981 bikes and the 250NDX-B is slower at 140KPH and the GSX250E is also 140KPH. Unfortunately the book doesn't give a top speed for any of the GSX400 models but the 400NB is quoted as 170KPH, which is slower than the previous model by 5KPH. Back in the day I was originally going to go for the GSX as my two previous bikes were Suzuki, but the SD won me over as it had that big bike look. Now for some more positives.

I also did like the GSX250. My dad bought a nice one from the small ads real cheap back in 1987. APO502V. Had some great times on that bike, I would have gladly given one a home some years back. Were the looks as good as the 250N? Debatable. It certainly also had that big bike look and feel that Honda achieved with the 250N and the engine sounded fantastic.

I think the SD is better in looks, and most things, but I but I especially liked smooth power delivery of the GSX engine. I've no measure of how reliable the GSX engine was or how long they lasted, but none of the people I knew that had one, ever complained of anything.

TRUE STORY. I was seventeen on my CB250N reg AVT 80T, hanging out at the car park of a local public house. Paul Boot rolls up (a rich kid) on his shiny new GSX250, started insulting my super dream with the usual wet dream slow bikes etc etc. Paul was probably 16st and at that time I was only about 8 1/2 st. So the gauntlet was thrown down. Let’s race the straight mile (the end of the straight mile went passed the car park). There was quiet a crowd watching as Paul and I set off, I can remember to this day (sadly) thrashing my superdream past the red line, but oh the joy riding past the car park with Paul behind me 😃😃😃😃😃. Needless to say he didn’t come back to the car park that night 😊

had a gs250 (custom model) I used to thrash it so hard into the red line (super smooth, it just revved forever) the headers used to regularly glow red, never even discoloured its oil

I had a GSX250 in the late 80’s bought it from Charlie Freeman Motorcycle’s on Whitt Moor, Chesterfield , it ran quite smooth and would hold an indicated 80mph on the M180 easily , owned around a year 100% reliable during that time though I do prefer the Honda Superdream the Suzie was a great bike 👍

Personally not a fan of the styling on Suzukis of that era. The lines on the SD flowed so much nicer IMO.
