so currently waiting for a balance chain to arrive, so dropped onto the leaky forks. first job drain the old oil, looked revolting and smelt of incontinent tom cat. always nice to find that someone has tried to seal the drain bolt with gasket goo . then shift that tricky little 14mm hex plug thingy that holds the spring. and basically give everything a good clean out, new seals fitted and back together with new oil. pumped them a few times to get the oil working and they're almost ready to go back on, probably give them a polish first.

and onto the steering head bearings, there wasnt much wrong with them that I could feel but it needed a new bottom yoke and so not much point fitting secondhand bearings. first job seat the washer with a bit of old waste pipe then tap the bottom cup in with a nylon hammer, flush with the lower part of the headstock is where I want it for now then tap the top cup fully home (it will sit proud) then, with fingers only, push the bearing onto the lower yoke, I'm aiming for as straight as possible then fit the yoke into position (without the top bearing) and use the adjuster nut and a c spanner to pull the bearing and cup into position. then remove and check everything has seated properly. then just a case of a bit of extra grease and fit the top bearing and adjust

The colours look very similar. I'd be tempted to pop to the Mini dealer with a panel and casually browse the cars and offer up the panel to compare. I went to our local Halfords to look at the rattle cans with my candy bourgogne red panel but the range they had is tiny compared to when I worked for them, and there was nothing close. I need to go to a proper superstore, I think. Moonraker blue is a Rover colour but it's a greyer colour, not as blue if that makes sense. Used to see quite a few SD1's in that colour and I think the Rover 216 in Keeping Up Appearances was Moonraker blue.

so onto the build back up, selectors in then the gear shafts in and then the fiddly sweary bit, crankshaft and balancers and once I was happy that everything was torqued up and set to my satisfaction on with its lid

Making it look easy ther Buster. Must get me some of those grips 👍 they're pretty good things, the other side is for for grabbing clutches for the same purpose, so quite a useful tool

I should probably change the name of this thread now to cb400t (t standing for 'thing' as its not 400t spec) still back to the build, clutch I treat as a mini build in itself oil pump (robbed from an old 250 engine I have) cleaned and primed (really important not to fit it dry) then clutch, oil pump and primary nailed on

gave the clutch case a bit of a polish (didnt go mad, the bikes no minter) and after a false start (cant fit the clutch case over the original 400a rubber boot on the oil pressure switch, doh!) fitted the clutch case never seen o rings as crusty as these on the inlet rubbers, well overdue a change then frame back onto engine, or engine back in depending how you look at it
