I am working through my early CB400, now having sourced a correct front wheel. When I got the bike I found the front spindle was not far enough through, protruding from the right fork leg and not being long enough for the castle nut on the left, no split pin as it was clear of the bolt!! eek....... My correct wheel has the same issue, I think the front spacer on the right may be too long. Does somebody have one they can measure for me? hopefully it is as simple as finding a correct one! The correct wheel looks great....much better quality than later steel spoked wheels.

I think I'v got one handy I'll measure it tomorrow when I get home from work. remind me if I forget thanks buster.........I will pull mine and measure it too, currently its fitted with the castle nut half on! the spindle etc all looks correct. Having said that I have just looked at a scrap wheel and found a shorter spacer stuffed in it which when fitted only protrudes slightly from the oil seal which I reckon will be the correct one!!! the bike was clearly wrong when I got it. A question though......the washer on the left side of the fittings, does this go under the castle nut as usual or does it sit between the speedo drive and fork tube. I do notice the disc on the left is very slightly closer to the fork leg than the other side though nothi9ng is fully tight yet having done the fork seals and refitted the legs.

the spacer that you've found certainly sounds like the right one, as you say not much sticks past the seal. the washer goes under the castelated nut, theres a seat machined into the fork leg for it I think, worth a look at johnf's fork guide to double check

Yes, recess in port side ( left as you sit on the bike )fork leg for washer. Short spacer on the right that sits just proud of the dirt/dust/grease seal.
You know of CMSNL for the very informative exploded views ?
Pay special attention to the Speedo drive unit, look on CMSNL for the easily bent drive "dog" plate. Also how the Speedo drive unit "stop" works else break the drive unit.
Don't forget grease. I fit "double sealed" ( rather than "tin shield" ) wheel bearings which last much longer I find.

Thank you both....the only worry now is what is the speedo drive stop? I just ensured the drive located the dogs on the plate and checked the it turned the cable socket before angling it upwards without touching the fork leg and then nipping it all up.
