Have serviced my front brake, pads, bleed, master cylinder kit and while improved slightly they are still crap (CB250NA). The discs on my bicycle stop quicker. From what I have read the front brake was never great. I simply can't remember what was good or not back in the 80's. Good news is that ABS is not required as I can pull the brake as hard as I can and while it slows there is no chance of a wheel locking or any sense of urgency. I have just learned to leave much larger gaps in the traffic. I was thinking of installing a braided hose but unless that makes a step change in performance I am not sure if it is worth the effort. While searching around I found someone that said the twin piston caliper from a 93 CB250 would fit straight on and make a big difference. I thought I would ask if anyone has experienced such an upgrade. As an aside I only found one for sale at £450. Not doing that unless I know it works.

I'v got the early single disc set up on my 400 thing, I rebuilt the calliper and master cylinder and then added a braided hose, its nearly a brake now. I'd check that you have the correct master cylinder for a single disc set up before spending any money.
I also had the same thoughts about the 250 nighthawk brake set up, bought one a couple of years back but never got round to trying it on an SD, if I can find it I'll try and offer it up to my bike and see if its anywhere near. if it does fit you can have it for a damn sight less than £450

Thanks all for the replies. I have some hope that something is possible and worth investigating further. I find it odd that what was once considered an acceptable brake is now considered fairly poor. Then again I am sure the same was said when the move from drums to discs occurred

My first SD (MDW) bought about 8 years back was the first bike I owned with a disc brake - I thought it was fantastic - it’s about expectation

10 years ago when I bought my SD, my first impressions were the brakes are knackered, the suspension is knackered, and the engine is knackered, so I overhauled the brakes, braided line good pads etc, same with the forks, new rear shocks, engine overhaul and so on, and after all that is was practically the same, it is what it is, just ride it and have a laugh 👍

If you still suspect the master cylinder, I bought a ebay cheap job at just over eleven quid and it works fine. Even if you don't trust it for long it will prove the condition of the one you have.

My CB400NC came complete with the twin pot callipers but, when I bought it, the brakes were crap.
New pads, overhaul of the callipers and thorough cleaning of the discs has improved the front brakes by 500%.
Still crap compared to my more modern bikes but at least they do work now.
(Many thanks to the Forum members who helped me through the process).👍
