Mr RE Continental GT250 was originally designed to run on 6V There is a well known way to convert to 12v, disconnect the Green/Yellow from the ignition switch and then connect it to the Green/Black wire The 60s 6v bikes have a 6 coil alternator - normally only 2 coils are used ( the Green/Yellow Wire) - when the light switch is switched on this then connects the other 4 coils (the Green/Black wire) The impact is the emergency start function where if the battery is flat the alternator is connected directly to the coil/points no longer works I intend to put a modern rectifier in Rationale for 12v - all the lights have come with 12v bulbs - Allows me to put 12v discreet LED indicators on - The battery I bought as Kempton is 12v I assume I need to get a 6v coil or add a ballast resistor The SD has a voltage regulator on it - do I need to put one on the 250GT or will the battery effectively do the job This is the type of rectifier I am thinking of using  |

yep lets make my head hurt with a wiring system I'm not very familiar with  lets try the terminology first, cos otherwise it gets confusing, the rectifier isnt really a voltage regulator as such, its a series of diodes (how many depends on what phase the alternator is putting out, three phase on a superdream) that converts AC power to usable DC power. easy way to identify the phase, one wire from alternator to rectifier=single phase, superdream three wires=three phase etc could you put a wiring diagram up for the Continental please? if you have one |

So here goes This is the alternator principle, normally 2 coils but when headlight on 6 coils  This is the wiring diagram  and this is what it would look like removing the redundant wires on the recommended 12v conversion  More to come… |

So a few years ago I saw this on e-bay - not well described but it looked OK so I bought it - It took me a long while to research what it was. It turned out to be a police specification alternator  I found this on a BSA site I think the original stator would have been a 47162  So if I swapped the stator for the up rated one it has much more umph |

So the reason about using a rectifier/regulator rather than just a rectifier comes from reading about 12volt systems A Triumph on 12v has a Zenner Diode in the circuit, found this  This is a typical Triumph 12v wiring diagram  Zenner diodes are no longer available I think CTB’s mind is now exploding |

there was an episode of wheeler dealers where Ed China did a negative earth conversion on an eastern european (maybe russian) car. it looked pretty simple and could be well worth finding and watching as from memory it was a three cylinder two stroke, so lots in common with bike wiring. the key point (I think) was to swap the ignition coil wires around (and change the radio, but thats not really relevant here).
to go to 12 volt your going to need a 12 volt alternator, or am I missing something?
then it all depends on type of alternator used as to which system of rectifier you use, if you had a three phase alternator you could then use a superdream rectifier, known to be pretty reliable as lots of Suzuki's of a certain age end up with them on

So the common way to move the old Brit bikes from 6v to 12 volt is to retain the current alternator but instead of normal running using 2 coils and 6 coils with the headlight on re wire so all 6 coils are used for normal running If you look at the stator data for a 47167 at 3000rpm with all 6 coils active it produces 12 volts so should suffice Looking at the triumph wiring diagrams for 12v they all have a Zenner diode to regulate the power - these are no longer available Hence the question of replacing the rectifier with a rectifier/regulator I have since found this    |
