I have Bridgestone BT45 tyres on my bike and I thought I would check how old they are after reading an article about markings on tyre casings. Other than size and pressure related numbers mine say T1902. According to the article that suggests that they were made on the 19th week of 2002! If that age is correct I am off to find something new. The reason for my reticence is that the tyres look brand new. No cracks or other visible signs of deterioration I appreciate that a 20 year old tyre should be changed regardless of apparent condition but is the T1902 correct or even a manufacturing date?

That is correct but whether you change them depends on the tyre If they have been in a garage out of sunlight then I would not change them personally My Classic Triumph 3TA tyres are over 20 years old My BSA tyres were put on in 2010 all perfectly serviceable and in very good condition My 400 Superdream tyres are 15 years old again as good as the day when new If the bike lives by outside then a different matter

Thanks BritPete. That makes sense and sounds like a pragmatic approach. I am relatively sure it has been garaged and well cared for. I will give the tyres a good inspection and decide from there. I doubt they will ever be used beyond 60mph and I have been that speed on my bicycle with tyres that don't look as new!!

If just changed the original rear tyres of a car from Oct 2002. There was nothing wrong with the right Tyre but the left would not last another year most likely. The tyres were still in good order though. In discussion, it is noted that the compound on more recently produced Tyre seems to be inferior quality, in respect to longevity.
