Whats the best method for refinishing clock covers?
I've spent an hour getting them clean with celluose thinners, I have used plastic restorer in the past but this fades. Not keen on using Oliver Oil, Peanut Butter, ATF, snake oil or whatever other oil just in case it went wierd.
Can these be painted without looking tacky, I was thinking a adhesion promoter, followed by primer, satin black then clear lacquer. Will this be too many layers? and potentially loose the texture?

Kinnell. Right, (I'm busy you know) here we go. First collect a set of crap clocks. These will do. Then use a soft-ish wire brush and ger rubbin ( not the panel lights though). Clean off with thinners. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. Then wipe em with a bit of plastic cleaner. Then the final secret ingredient, tyre shine. This took ten minutes. 👍 Nowgerroffmybloodycase 🤣

No problem. The issue you have with painting is that the stuff most people use to shine em up is silicone. No paint has ever stuck to that. It's the years of silicone that creates the grey goo that coats these old clocks now. Others may have fixed the problem another way.

A light and well-directed butane flame will transform these types of plastics from faded to looking good, but
BEWARE: every time I've attempted this with any item w/ transparent windows such as the warning lights on a SD clock cover I've managed to accidentally sun-fade (yellow) the edges or more of those coloured windows, even when being really careful. Which sucks a lot.
Have never had any luck with Hydrogen Peroxide to reverse this although many swear by it.
A heat-gun works too but with even less precision.
