Picked up my new car this week, on Thursday tried to put the spare wheel (kept from my old car) which is the correct size into the wheel well - It did not fit
Apparently it has been designed to have a space saver, the difference between the space saver and my full tyre is
1) The Radius of the space saver is 1" smaller than the spare and car tyres 2) The width of the spare is 225mm and the space saver 115mm
As I tow a caravan and the space saver should go on the back (non driving wheels) very uncomfortable with a space saver
After lots of measuring and research on the web I worked out I could get a 215/45 tyre in the wheel well on the spare rim - this size tyre is within the allowed types on the rim
My local garage verified it by putting a new on in the well - nice guys
Oh and one other point Vauxhall have changed the stud pattern on the newer Insignias so I need to buy a new steel centre
So 1) I would have a tyre still 1" smaller than the real tyres so would have to go on the rear 3) The width is almost the same as a full spare (10mm smaller)
If I had a flat on a dark Sunday evening with the caravan in tow the larger tyre would be a get out of jail - the space saver may be suicide
Anyone any experience thoughts on my (what may be dashed and not so) cunning plan

I bought a new car recently and there is no spare wheel at all just a compressor and puncture sealant, piss poor when you spend thousands on a car at least there’s AA cover😃

The 10mm width difference should not be an issue, my Mondeo Zetec that I scrapped last year, when bought in 2000 it was towing car of the year (in one Mag), and was bought with towing a caravan in mind (only for a few years as it turned out). The spare was a 195 where the full size were 205.... My Hyundai Elantra has a full size spare (pasted it's MOT yesterday ) but alas no tow bar.

possibly the most dangerous thing I'v ever done in a car is put one of those awful space savers on the front wheel of my yaris, I said I'd never do it but I hit a pothole on a narrow backroad (15 mph and it ultimately wrote the car off) and I was on a bit of downhill and blocking the road. I had to chock the rear wheel with a 'borrowed' top stone off a handy dry stone wall and try to change the wheel as quick as I could as cars were waiting, so I ended up with the space saver on the front thankfully I was only about a mile from home. I could only describe the car as plain dangerous with that thing on the driving/steering wheels

I hate those space savers but it could be worse. When my wife bought a new Fiesta around five years ago I was driving it and got a puncture.
I opened the boot, pulled up the boot carpet and to my total amazement there was no spare, just a can of some stuff that you had to spray in the tyre. Suffice to say, I got her a proper full size spare on ebay brand new from a salvaged car. I think they do it to save dosh.

The dosh is the minor part - its the weight, if it is not standard it is not included in all the fuel tests etc - gives better fuel economy
