I needed to get round to this little job, getting two of the bikes put down as historic. so after a bit of reading on DVLA's website I set off to a fairly local post office (one that does vehicle tax) to get the forms. luckily I took the two V5's with me as it turned out I didnt really need to do anything other than hand them over and the guy behind the counter simply taxed both bikes for me there and then and sent the V5's in for their change to historic.

Mine went off via the PO 31st March with a V112 form . Not had anything back yet, so went back to PO and they taxed it there and then zero payment. Then came off another bike and haven't been able to ride it yet.

I get the feeling DVLA are still short staffed/snowed under as my log books finally arrived today I suppose historic tax class is probably a bit of a low priority at the moment

On this note I have two SD’s. One registered March 81 and the other January 82.
Am I right in thinking for the 81 I have to wait until April 2022 before I can do what you’ve done?

I'm not 100% sure, but I think if its registered before the end (might be beginning) of january then it becomes eligible that year. typical british bureaucracy, everything has to be needlessly complicated. I think though that you can type in the reg on the gov site and it tells you when it will be eligible, or has todays sun completely scrambled my brain cell?

If you have a dating cert dated within the last year you can use that. I think it has to be 40 years old by the 4th of Jan to get it historic in the April. But to be MOT exempt, that starts on its 40th birthday.

I would think you would have to wait til April 22 NHK a 1980 NA was born Oct 1979, so you could get the £30 birth cert from Honda, the NA could be a 1979/1980 date of manufacture which would let you do it now (or at least in 6 weeks when the letter comes from Honda). Worked for me, £30 for the letter, and £21~ tax back. DVLA I picked up the kicker on Mon 12th, seller did the change of keeper online, had the V5 on Thurs 15th, so SORNed and will try and keep it to a couple of taxing days a year. 1st Sept for the 3 already historic ones, and perhaps 1st April 2022 for the DX (for 6 months £38) and the other ones yet to do, If the NC goes, £38 a year.

Good luck if you try Honda for a dating cert, I asked them on the 9th of April and am still waiting to hear if they have the info. (14 weeks) Waiting for Japan to look. The way it's going, The Black Pig will be historic using the reg date before Honda can say yes or no!

Could be the COV-SARS2 restrictions in japan perhaps,at least one of the parts suppliers were taking no new orders for a while, and now warn of significant delays. I've also some "specially order in / on request" parts from DSS, they still have not arrived. I suspect the same reason may be affecting the Honda letters.

The official line from Honda is this:
Your Year of Manufacture Application is still in progress, however we are experiencing difficulties locating the details in our archives. Due to this we are currently awaiting further clarification from Japan.
I do agree it is most likely covid related delay.
I don't pester them, and have only sent them two emails, one at seven weeks and one just the other day. I am in no particular hurry for it, it would just be nice to know the manufacture date. The frame number puts it about half way through the run and it is on a 'X' plate being registered on the 8th of August 1981, so not long until it is MOT exempt and then historic the following year. Why they couldn't have made the two qualify at the same time is beyond me.
