having just got back from a 450 mile trip out on the superdream, 250 miles of which was done in the pouring rain..
so..anybody got any real world solutions to waterproof, leather gloves and boots ?
i have various nik-wax products for my walking gear, and its fine splashing about in puddles [ never lasts long ] and its all but useless travelling for 200 miles in the rain at 50mph !
dubbin has been traditionally used for waterproofing leather boots, but its far to expensive for a wee tin to use all the time so i am considering buying a block of beeswax, melting it down and applying to my boots..but not sure if applying it to leather gloves will make them slippy ?
i cant afford the latest and greatest gear, so have to make do with hand me downs and the gear i have, in the winter months going on extended bike rides i carry 3 pairs of leather gloves, and change them as and when they are soaked, in the summertime i carry 2 pairs [ summertime being a loose term in the highlands ]
or i could just wear a pair of wellies, fishing gloves, and my yellow guy cotton jacket and pants and to hell with the rain !
[ guy cotton is the gear that fishermen use when out at sea ]
the leather boots i wear all the time on the bike are altberg full leather military boots, which are strong, well built boots, but i cant seem to waterproof them properly !
not really interested about any commercial products, as in the real world, most, if not all the lotions and potions i have tried just dont work...

I don’t ride in the rain unless I get caught unawares any gear I have bought supposedly claiming to be waterproof is at best shower proof.I wouldn’t spend large amounts on gear claiming to be 100% waterproof I’d rather use my car.Last time I did ride in very heavy rain I was on a maxi scooter with a pair of £15 Aldi ski pants over jeans with a fluorescent jacket I wore as a car park attendant over my jacket rode 30 miles each way and my “waterproof “ gloves proved not to be but was dry everywhere else but put this down to the excellant protection from the elements given by the maxi scooter. If it’s raining stay in bed or use the car😁😁

not having or wanting a car, leaves me with riding about in all weathers, and we get 4 seasons in a day up here, so avoiding the rain is unheard of...

never found anything that would waterproof leather, I used to have a thin overcoat/ leggings from m&p back in the 90's, they were cheap and kept the rain off for a 20 mile commute. still got the leggings, the last really wet ride I did in those was down to derbyshire last year, I got wet but the next day more than made up for it. also used to have frank thomas goretex gloves, they were a double edged sword, they kept your hands dry but the outer layers soaked up water and the hands turned to ice blocks. I did consider fitting those muff things on the handlebars that farmers use on quads, not exactly cool but who cares if your hands are warm and dry. only thing I'v ever found that guarantees dry feet is wellies, probably give you a sore toe on a long ride though

Derri boots - back in the late 70's early 80's they always had the adverts in MCN and MCW. Dry feet always appealed to me but their style didn't. Now I wouldn't care less about the looks.

I was looking at those on Ebay last week they looked ok and were cheap ,only problem was that the largest size in stock was a 3

I always wore Derri boots in the 70s when doing rallies just like a “posh” welly😁 but in the mid 90s I’d put me Derri boots on if raining on short ride to work on my GS850 I rode onto wet factory concrete bike shed/unloading area where a large sheet of cardboard lay,I rode in onto it lost grip and slid to a stop on my side I jumped up picking bike up quickly ( couldn’t do it now😂) later in day could feel my heel was getting very painful on inspection a big blister had formed where heat generated through Derri boot had burned my heel but boot was undamaged took ages to heal and I threw the Derries away😬😬
