Back to AVK CB400N survey and parts swap out (as mechanically required). So why was this bike taken off the road? Indications point to it having a incident with minor damage to the right side, backed up by the discovery that the right fork stanchion was bent. Looking at them, the bend in the right fork stanchion could not be seen, but once dis-assembled! [plan was take the fork-legs off, renew seals and pop on a couple of painted fork cases, list them on ebay, but the bent stanchion scuppered that plan] So speculation, could they have lost control going into a garage or going out the right side of a walled driveway? Though it could have slid on the road on the right, there is no other evidence to suggest that so far...still looking... Main issue I'm considering at the moment is whether the lower steering bearing may have been stressed,,,, So if this was what happened, original indicators maybe trashed, and the alternatives fitted. Rode it for a while, but it would not have felt right with the bent stanchion...

Removal of the temporary braking system, from AVK (2x30mm caliper onto original right 240mm disc). Thanks to BP for the use of the NC mounting bracket.

I had intended to fit twin discs running with 2 x twin 30mm calipers, but that 18" wheel will not allow the right hand disc, it's approx 3mm to far starboard. So braking wise, it will have to run in CB450T Hawk configuration for the moment (it is perfect for the bike it is intended for later though)
1/2" bore KE8 VT250F / VF400F Master Cylinder (slightly greater leverage than the standard 14mm setup) I'll have to get a rubber boot to protect the Hydraulic brake light switch....
So to get to this stage, I've... Renewed the lower Yolk and renewed the bearings with taper rollers. The original yolk looks still serviceable, but with the evidence of a mild right hand side front incident and some marks on the original bearings, best to give it a close dimensional check and overhaul.

I'd be very interested to know how it feels on the road with an 18" front, nice work

Another small step forward on AVK, Tsubaki Alpha chain, new JT front sprocket (16T), new fixing plate (23811-292-000) and bolts (92101-06012) installed. The original fixing plate and one of the bolts are in good condition and can be used on the 450DX later. The longevity of the chain will depend on keeping corrosion away, as I doubt I'll ever wear it out . The Geni looks in good shape, unfortunately the cover is not so good, so plenty of PTFE/silicon grease on it's surface against a new Honda gasket, in the hope that it will swap out easily later. Next is to install a swingarm that is already refurbished, whilst I get the original back to new like finish etc.

Some more work on AVK... Swing arm from previously refurbished stock... Brake plate given a grease up and a new torque arm bolt (this brake plate and it's wheel was the one I fitted to the CB400F2 originally back in 1982/83)... Still with it's original from showroom Honda brake shoes most likely, as the the donor 250 Deluxe likely was less than year old when it's parts became available at the breakers... AVK's rear FVQs (right hand pair) looked ok, but there are some marks on the damper rods, but they are quite high up on the rod, whilst I give them a closer inspection, pulled another pair (left in pic)from a box for now... On with the swing arm and shocks... Had to halt at the rear as the 30x52x7 seal for the wheel, I cannot find (will be in logical safe place somewhere, have to wait on the posty again).... So decided to change some engine mounting bolts. On removal found three original bolt's one had a pattern nut, then the lower bracket to engine bolt was a non Honda item which was 8mm not the required 10mm. Anyway the bracket got the fastest of preps and recoats, 2k primer baked in the sun, and a acrylic colour coat also rapid dried in the sun whilst having a quick bit to eat...

The Genuine rear indicators were not fitted when I got AVK, I thought they were just maybe cheap pattern ones until I noticed they are genuine stanley reflectors. Not CB400F2 anyway, so does anyone recognise them? need Them? (i'll have to get a shot of the rear as the pic never saved)
This ebay link has one of the lenses listed but the stalks are a bit different, and they don't know either. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/133016968740They are really nice indicators but I can’t afford a bike to match them
