My on going works for NHK CB250NA born October 1979, registered in the U.K. 1980, & AVK CB400N D.O.B not known, but also 1980 registration. These are not full resto's, so I'll just post up the bits I'm tackling as and when, noting / hopefully highlighting info useful for others, intending to work on similar bikes. My objectives NHK CB250NA Try and get it back to 95% standard parts, original and serviceable, by end of summer 2023, and keep it that way. That would equate to the condition I received it in but with the seat fixed, the chain and sprocket kit replaced (was a CB400F ration so massively over-geared , 17/38 rather than 15/41), the exhaust totally renewed. Functionally it is in very good order at the moment, but has a few non-standard bits, and need cosmetic TLC. Still livery of fast silver..but it's average mileage is still less than 100 per year. let me cheat and put up an on arrival pic... AVK CB400N hondasuperdream.proboards.com/thread/1306/cheap-400n-kicker-glasgowto get it back to about 90% original/ standard in about 3 or 4 years, But for now it is to get it back working (fix the carbs and HT lead defect), make it colour red, and swap out cycle parts to allow their overhaul or sale. ( substitute parts partially borrowed from other projects hondasuperdream.proboards.com/thread/1073/back-on-road-hope?page=1 ). AVK ran fine last July, apart from standing in a petrol puddle from the carbs!

First thing for today is to say a big thank you to Nick for posting these lovely bolts up to me. 93481-08040-00, these are how the lower yolk fork clamp bolts were or rather "Bolt Washer" with original appearance, on all SD models .The problem now is that is that the part is still available, but although genuine Honda parts, they now have scoop heads. on the SD in such an obvious visible location, they look like pattern bolts. The same issue on the later original exhaust clamp bolt washer, the 35mm ones have the same appearance change in the current part. So these are reserved for this thread, the other bikes can have the scoop heads

Not posting in sequence really, but AVK will get temporary running gear until the wheels TLC and new tyres, finish the brakes etc The bracket from the ND muddy had bad breakdown of the black zinc plate on the left side, so it was detached from the plastic muddy , preped at the breakdown, etch wash 2k primer and painted satin black... Some progress on the temp front wheel [ borrowed from my other thread for CB250N201#### T Reg GKH CB250N Noted as being black on the V5, Objective, appearance as per a Silver CB250NDB, with a kickstart, and minor differences,] as well, new Avon road rider fitted, kitting the brakes. Will the brakes be run at 14;1 master cylinder to piston ratio, or go radical at 22:1...
Looking at the bracket for the muddy, quite sure it would fit over a nice old ME 11 front tyre, but possibly the road rider my be to close. More measuring required.

Going to have to to sort out chains and sprockets soon, I've never used master links before, only spring links. After much youtube gazing, I decided to order one of these little gadgets ... www.ebay.co.uk/itm/224175839077

Finally assembled my bag of FVQ parts into a Shock! But the nuts that were in there, totally wrong (no idea what they are for). So 100% NOS, except the lock nut, which is a M10 X 1.25 titanium flanged metal locking nut...

Chain Time AVK will need the swing arm swapped out and it's existing one to be refurbished (I hope) My intention is to run 520 chain on all the comstar equiped bikes (and 525 chain on the later wheels) So I intend swapping out the 530 chainset that is on AVK, when swapping the swing arm and wheel. Should I expend one of my Honda NOS chains I thought No. So went hunting for 520 chain, and tooling;- Approx. cost Tsubaki Alpha O-ring 108 link £25- Tsubaki Alpha x-ring (Gold side plates) 94 link) £25 Additional Spring link and master-link £12 AFAM tool £20 Chain splitter (Already bought in Thailand 2019 £7) Result A. 108 link carefully reduced to 102 links, choice of spring link or master link placed in the box for future use on 250 NHK (To complete one C&S kit) Then part B make up a 100 link endless chain, for use on AVK, and practice using the AFAM gadget;- Seemed to work ok, results quite consistent (I found once I fitted a new battery in the calipers, to check it....) Tsubaki Alpha is listed as Ok for about 120H.P. so quite a good factor of safety for 27 / 43 H.P. tsubaki-rider.com/en/products/products-road

Time for fiddling with the side lock (no key, unlocked) on AVK was over 1 hour ago !. Pop marked 2mm above the circular barrel on the rectangular surface. Loaded a very sharp 4.2mm left hand drill. Drilled all the tumblers out, even though it went through the wall of the lock, it did not graze the frame (this time). Once drilled I turned the barrel anti-clockwise, using a small blade screwdriver, to line up the grub screw to the 12 o'clock position, out it came with a little shake...

AVK is getting a new front end, to allow the old parts to be checked and refurbished for a future Standardisation refit sometime down the road. So currently we have the front running a tubed Metzler ME11 3.25 x 19, and it's going to have the 1984 configuration with a 90/90-18 V rated Avon Roadrider AM26 (the first version). The Road-rider is a bit taller then the Metzler in aspect. A quick check on the front muddy mounting bracket clearance, for the 400ND muddy. was in order... Results ME 11 rolling diameter (measured) <329mm. Avon 90/90-18 book says 619mm, 620-621 measured. Bracket clearance to the ME11 was >12mm to <13.5mm so using 13mm nearest to the brackt to muddy blade securing (the closest point). So 13mm + >4mm smaller rolling diameter, less bracket securing fastener head (1.4mm) so will consider it as 15mm the closest point. So I was studying a few forum discussions on required clearances, and took away from those, that for a sub-100m.p.h. bike, on a similar sized crossply tyre, 12mm clearance should not give issues. So I have an OK clearance, with 3mm further factor of safety still, with the taller tyre.. Conclusion is that I don't need to extend the muddy securing brkts, if I did it would need an extra 24mm added (lowest practical extension, I should take the sizes for latter perhaps) The universal CB250RS muddy Blade 61100-471-0000 incorporated into many different part numbers, it is the bracketry that differs...(first noticed it on a N.O.S. CB400T Hawk item)

There (interim)front muddy is now re-assembled for going on AVK. The seemed no chance of getting a "plate setting" for where the securing bolts go through, as shown on the standard CB400ND black muddy in the pics. So I've added in some individual stand- offs to the red one..they should do the essential function.

I got some rubber washers off ebay (yonks back, lost them in the filing system somewhere) with this very job in mind, they were self adhesive on one side.

Just dragged NHK out the garage for a quick look-see, and to give the carbs and battery some exercise. I must get some chrome mirrors back on....
