Following a request regarding how I applied decals, I thought this would be handy. Let's assume you have got to the stage of painting the colour coats on the tank. If it is a metallic colour, then this includes lacquer. If it is black or Helios red, then no lacquer is yet needed. The job should then be rubbed down with wet 1000 grit or 800 grit paper and/or Scotchbrite (red). This will provide a key for both the decal and the next coat of lacquer, it also fixes any bits of crap that may have fallen onto the job up to this point. The decals are then cut out with the backing still in place and marked with bits of tape to the correct position on the piece (Tank or side panel). I often use not only tape, but pencil marks from tape to the top covering of the decal to more accuratly line them up. When you are completely satisfied, the backing can be removed and the decal applied using the marks you made. The long decals I do in sections, not on one go. That is to say, I remove an inch or so of backing and only place a bit in position, then again lay it to the job to check alignment. Then remove a bit more backing, check again, and so on. When done, there could be air pockets. Do NOT use a pin. Take a brand new stanley blade and use it flat against the job and cut. Do not poke a hole, cut a hole, it will then release the air and lay down flat. Do this in a line in the decal if possible for even more invisible results. Now clean and degrease it all and spray the final clear coats to your satisfaction.
