After working on my new to me 1980 Superdream for the last week I am hoping to give it its first test ride tomorrow. New rectifier/regulator fitted, two broken wires reconnected, chain lubricated and tensioned, (but will be replaced together with sprockets asap), all nuts and bolts checked for tightness, (just as well as some only finger tight). Rear wheel removed in order to check condition of swing arm, fortunately in good condition. Rear brake drum and shoes checked, all OK. Although front brake pads look to have plenty of meat left I cannot undo the calliper fixing bolts at present. WD40 being applied every day. Throttle cable adjusted at carburettors as all handlebar adjustment used up. A thorough check over reveals that, although far from original, it is in surprisingly good condition. It starts instantly and sounds sweet but I have no idea how good the gearbox is as yet. Fingers crossed for tomorrow. Once again thanks for the advice.

All went well. Runs and handles surprisingly well.
However, clutch seems to be on its last legs. That was the only bad news, all other things are adjustments. Gear change lever set too high for me, back brake binding slightly, one mirror loose and flapping about.
So, new chain and sprockets and new clutch will give me a very good bike.

it can be worth stripping the old clutch and measuring the plates, they can stick, I only mention it because I had a bad experience with after market friction plates

I understand the reference to measuring the plates but “they can stick”?
Can you explain a little more before I buy a new clutch set?
Thanks.

if bikes stand for a long time the oil can drain away from between the friction plates and the actual clutch plates, it leaves behind a sort of sticky residue and the plates can then stick together. I only mention it because I bought an after market set of clutch plates that were of shocking bodge quality, they ended up exactly where they belonged, in a landfill somewhere. when I measured my own (original) friction plates I found virtually no wear, should have measured in the first place and saved the money and headaches of the after market crap
