quick question do the later type carbs (with the non adjustable float valves) have a different designation from the earlier VB31's?
is there any way to identify them externally?

Yes Paul.....it's all about the little box. They were still the same VB number but the non adjustable floats came in on the C boxed carbs onwards from memory. (C,D,E etc).

is that the little box after the 31 mark Nick? so I'd be looking for VB31 followed by C,D or E? got a hankering for carbs with a pilot jet that I can remove to clean

It's all a bit confusing as I believe the change hit the 400's at a slightly different time as it did on the 250, one of them got the non adjustable floats on the very late 'B' boxed carbs.
You just reminded me, I have a refurbed set of C serial carbs ready to go for the 250 deluxe when I finally get home - they were literally just finished and then I was on the plane here back in 2018. They were refurbished by a company called 'Lightning Services' which was a bit of a contradiction as they had them for months on end.
They were done at considerable cost inside and out....now, where are those pics..
