So here’s something I’ve been meaning to do for some time, which is start posting on here. All my posts are “are across the way” on the other SD forum which has been fantastically helpful, loads of help and great people. I’ll start with the pics of the bike as advertised, I then went and got it January 2023, it’s now October 2023, so it’s moved on a wee bit, a bit slower progress than I’d like but life and weather dictate. Overall it’s been a great experience and many thanks to the other SD forum “across the way” and to the guys who are also here and who will have seen the story so far. I now have the benefit of hindsight, looking at these pics it does look pretty decent and now that I’m at where I’m at it was better than many but not as good as it looked to my untried eye, for some of you experienced guys it would be a walk in the park, with hindsight, a steep learning curve and some cracking help I’d be confident of taking on much sorrier specimens. But for me dipping my toe in, as the nasties started revealing themselves I thought I’d bought (and probably did) buy a “Lemon”. ©️Alfie

Starter motor arrived and I got my first lesson, drain oil before removing starter. New starter fitted, did compression test and it’s not good. Right 0, left 50psi. Oiled the bores, right 25, left 125psi. Plug that came out the right cylinder looks to have swarf of some sort on it. My heart sank when I saw this.

Hi Martin, You need some tonic and gin with that... Across the way ?? Anyways you are where you are. I assume you have not heard this bike running, know any history about it like if it's been "asleep" for the past twenty years ? Some new looking stuff on it like a shinny new ? Front mudguard You know what is meant in first aid by "the golden hour" This is the hour you should have spent looking at the bike before you purchased it, and a similar hour checking for stuff that had stuck like cables, brakes ( caliper bleed nipple ), Clutches and VALVES !!! A stuck valve can convert a viable engine into scrap in one stroke !! Anyways what's done is done. Drain oil to change starter motor ?? How much oil was in it I wonder ? The cylinder with very little compression, is the plug from that cylinder ? Look down that plug hole, I bet there is carnage seen compared with the other cylinder ? Remove the cam cover and take lots of pictures and post... You say engine turned over ok, how did you do this check ? It's Sunday tomorrow so go to church and prey ! You have a manual and know of CMSNL, you do now ! Also take a picture of the front of the engine to show c/case to cylinder base area and the head bolts. Also remove the flywheel cover and take picture of that and horizontal c/case joint. A picture tells 1000 words... Get a couple of cans of good pentrant.....

looks like aluminium to me, a magnet will help tell for certain and theres no easy way of putting this but its engine apart time and see what horrors lie within

Engine rebuilt, compression good, can I get a spark? No spark and it became obvious quite quickly what the problem was, stator was bodged (see pics). I got a stator on eBay from a seller I’ve had quite a few things from and he didn’t let me down.
Replacement stator fitted.
Got the engine running from there. Was pretty chuffed all things considered after seeing the swarf on that plug.

Winter has pretty much halted progress but I'm still gathering the bits and pieces I need. So after a wee wait I got myself a caliper. Initial looks were that it looks quite good. So first things first, the bleed nipple. Tried a gentle loosening, wasn't having it and didn't want to force it.
I've left it sitting for a week or so and have given it a spray of WD most days, did the same with pins.
Wahey, result. Nipple came loose very easily along with one of the pins. Other pin is still tight so I'll give it another wee while soaking before moving on.

That piston has seen better days As it was coming apart quite easily I thought I may have been able to reuse it but I’ll just get a full refurb kit with piston.
