I thought I would give another update on my starter motor in a new thread as the original thread is quite long. Suffice to say that the reconditioned starter motor that Buster sent me works perfectly. In fact I couldn't believe how fast it spun the engine. Unlike the old motor which drained the battery after two attempts to start the engine this one has just tried 10 times and is by no means exhausted yet. Ok the bike hasn't started yet but at least I now have something different to investigate. My suspicion is something electrical but time will tell. Thanks again Buster.

its all the fun of trouble shooting, spark is probably where I'd go next and if thats ok then its the dreaded carbs

How old is the fuel?
Mine would not fire, drained the tank, put some fresh fuel in it, and it fired up

It started, I am so happy! So spark looks to be ok. It needed 3/4 choke and no throttle but soon reduced the choke to zero. On startup the throttle was very slow to respond and slow to go back down again. Much much better when warmed up with throttle responding reasonably well. I will give it a short ride later to the petrol station. I suspect the carbs could do with some tuning. Not sure where to start with that but I at least have perfected getting them on and off the bike

if the throttles slow to shut off (when warm) I'd suspect the needles in the carbs, a decent quality rebuild kit should sort it

The news gets better. Disassembled the carbs and rebuilt. Didn't really see anything wrong apart from the o-ring on the inlet, see picture below. Throttle response is now good if I give it a minute or so to warm up a little. It starts before I have even taken my finger off of the starter button. Will see what happens after it has been sitting for 24 hours or so, but much more positive situation to be in.
