just snagged this on ebay (450 nighthawk) for £56. untested so a wait and see job. thing is I now dont mind 'borrowing' my 450 engines ignition system now that I'v got another stator to fall back on. I'm slowly coming to the conclusion that 400/450 engines need the hitachi system but I'v not fully given up on the 250 set up just yet...

a plot is afoot, I was looking at 400a decals and I thought to myself where have I seen those colours before? and then I remembered just need a couple of tins of triumph powder blue and some suitable primer...

bye bye muriel, I'd love to say its been nice knowing you but I'm not prepared to lie and my drawing abilities havent improved... I dont think it will matter too much as the after market copies are unlikely to fit like the genuine decals, so they'll probably need some guess work

I know duffers technique is to sand the rust away (and I'm not questioning that) but I really dont want to have to start welding a petrol tank if I can possibly help it. so my idea is to try gently (holding the gun at a reasonable distance) bead blasting the tank and filler cap cover to get rid of the rust. the slight downside of this (assuming that no pinholes suddenly show up ) is that it needs to be primed very quickly (within half an hour of blasting) as the blasting massively increases the metals surface area and makes it even more prone to rust. in turn this means any dings that need filling will have to be done on top of the primer , I'm thinking key the dent with 320 wet and dry (used wet) then 2 pack putty. masked up with insulation tape (about 3 layers) ready to blast, but not today cos I'v just had a shower

side panels roughed out with 80 grit in my palm sander (I know, I'm a thug) then rubbed down with 360 (wet) and then gone over with 600 (again wet), everything feels nice and smooth so I'm prepared to trust my fingers on that and consider them ready for painting

Looks like damn fine work to me. Getting your reflection in it like that is a clear indication of decent preparation. Hanging the tank so you can do top and bottom. I fully approve 👌 Can't wait to see the finished bike.

as it turns out its not just SD's that are hard to find nice decals for, the job of tracking down nice ones for the 400 thing is currently driving me insane (even more than usual ). I can get nice stripes from the good old US of A but they come with hawk side panel decals and the only 400 twin decals (the ones I want) that I can find that I like are from france, problem is will the two oranges match? unlikely enough of those woes, detailing on side panels

Looking good Paul.
Let me know if I can assist with getting the decals from over here for you, I’m guessing they are expensive to ship directly from a seller.
