I tried today but with only limited success, still seem to have a timing issue that I'm struggling with, maybe if I wire the 2nd gear switch wire to earth it might con the system into thinking its in 2nd gear. problem is its a unique camshaft (slightly different to the 250 and slightly different to the 400) and so its a unique cdi (in more ways than one). I did try one of the silicon diode thingy's on the old neutral wire but all that did was fry the main fuse...

You wouldn’t enjoy it, if it was easy 😉

so almost headbanging time, when I put the top end back together I could only get sporadic runs out of it, almost like the cam was a tooth out (checked that this morning and then double and treble checked) no better. so wired a cb450sc cdi onto it and that put me back to where I was, I can fire up warm it through, set the tickover but it doesnt want to rev through like it should. so tomorrow I'll try a different coil (doubtful it will make any difference) then its looking to me like get the stator rewound. oh nearly forgot went through the carbs again with my finest of fine toothcombs and I still havent found the smoking gnu
I did discover though why (I think) they are designated as vb34, they are basically 28mm carbs same as a 250, jetted as a 250 but with the addition of the cut off valves of the 400

I have a plan b. just bought a 250 cdi off ebay (came from a running bike) and I'v got a 250 stator. cheaper option than the rewind (tight yorkshire git )

a thought occurred to me last night, I might actually have a 250 cdi, first box of junk/treasure I looked in and hey presto a mildly bodged cdi. p first job solder the bodged connections then just a case of nailing it on, after feeling the weight of the 400a mag wheel I decided to go with the 250, did a quick check on the T mark and pickups and they all look ok to me (if this works then it will probably be better with a 250 camshaft, which luckily I have) and finally something that does work beautifully, lord beers tank bush

hooray! started first kick (battery not the best) and made it back under its own steam. feels to be running as it should just the odd pop and bang on the overrun in the exhaust (headers have seen better days) so probably wants the 250 camshaft. also a seller on ebay offered me a 250 stator for £17 (£3.20 postage) I couldnt say no, its cheap enough to send in for a rewind at that price

a few more bits and bobs done, 250 camshaft fitted and new headers (cheap jobbies from silvers, lots of swearing to fit) so ventured a bit further this afternoon, just a 20 mile total trip. this has shown up a couple of issues, the gearing is way too low (ordered a 34t rear sprocket) and I'v got a bit of an electrical issue somewhere, oil and neutral lights flash lovely when the indicators are on . other than that I have to say it feels great to ride a three valve twin again after all these years.

I ask for your forgiveness in advance on this one. I'v had a new battery chucking about for ages (bought for the cafe racer but no longer needed due to a redesign on the hop) but it doesnt fit any of my bikes. however today I discovered it could be persuaded to work with a slightly modified later type battery box (in my defence, yer 'onour, it was a bit rotten to begin with) so off with the rotten bit then bodge in the battery and bodge the door bolt (needed a longer bolt to reach the thread then locked it from behind with a nylock nut) its solid and secure but access on the go is a bit of a problem without tools. side panel still fits over it without fouling though
