so about 20 minutes to set up this little lot and then about 10 seconds to fit the barrels onto the pistons
then its a good idea to push the cam chain tensioner right back and pinch it with its nut while you can get at it then just a case of nailing everything else back on, fish 'n' chips for tea after that

success!it finally runs like a motorbike should, its not that I'v revved it like an idiot (cant yet, running in) but now it feels like it wants to go. bit of a carb glitch around 3000rpm but nothing thats really worrying me, a decent rebuild kit with new needles will probably sort that out. so a few minor niggles still to sort, the rear indicator has no continuity on its earth (grind a bit out underneath and weld the little git) wants a rear tyre fitting (new one in the garage) as its currently on a 120 section metzeller and its still got muriel on the tank...

You might find that carb glitch will disappear the more it's used - they like being used Buster.

so a while back (nicks 400 hawk, I think) I said I wouldnt let a wrong mag cover bother me, it turns out I was wrong, the thing has a six speed SD cover on. after a fair bit of umming and ahhing I decided to go with one from an auto as a little nod to what the engine was.

so keyster carb kit fitted (well some of it, I seem to have an awful lot of bits leftover ) and after one false start with one of the float bowl seals (pattern parts=crap fit) its running rather nicely. need to polish the new mag cover next and drop that on then (apart from muriel) its pretty much sorted. I'd put a pic up but my bloody ipad wont load imgbb (and various other websites) so much for doing my updates

an exercise in futility. one thing I'v noticed is vibration on the overrun in the headlight shrouds, this is caused by the washer that fits on the bottom yoke before the taper roller bearings go on. so today I removed it only to discover that this makes the bottom yoke foul the headstock and lockstops , so everything back off, washer back on and scratch head. then I noticed in my tin of rusty crap a couple of old SD exhaust gaskets (pattern copper jobbies) so refitted the forks with the exhaust gaskets between the top shroud rubber and the top yoke (fiddly, requires some swearing) and all back together. I'll have to do the same job on the SD now...

I had the same problem on my NC the shrouds could move up and down taking the headlight with it ,I bought a big bag of plumbing O rings found a couple that fit round the forks and bunged them in at the bottom it cured it the shrouds stopped moving all together .The NC had taper bearings too .

boring but necessary, whip rocker cover off and check torque (all ok) then check valve clearances (3 inlets to take up a touch and 1 exhaust to back off a touch) its on about 90 miles at this point. hopefully now plain sailing to its first proper engine service at around 750 miles.

so carbs still not perfect. I remembered a while back Carl fitted VB31's to a 450 engine and it ran just fine, so my warped logic is to fit a set of 450 carbs (off a californian 450 nighthawk, 86 model) to the 400 and see what happens? first job though was to give them a proper going through, first job accelerator pump (which isnt a pump at all, its effectively a switch) then on to the cut off valve thingy's then after blasting all the jets, tubes and general gubbins they're all back together and on the bike

tried to fire it up and the starter buttons dead? probably knocked a connection out somewhere, so kicker it is then and it fired up third kick beautifully on both cylinders. right helmet on and a quick run round the top road, it now pulls cleanly and runs really well (as it should) the only slight issue is a little (not much) popping on the over-run so probably needs to go down a size on main jet to suit the 400 engine. all in all though I'm chuffed to bits.

Great news.
That accelerator pump has to be the most pointless thing ever.
