Leaving cylinders on for now
Once base gasket released, leaving the cylinder in place saves possible piston damage.
Once sump is off remove cylinders with pistons and rods as a "unit", refit same way. For a full engine strip down it's easier this way. Refitting same as pistons inserted into bores on bench is easier than the other way. I believe this is how it was done in factory, much less risk and vertually no " rectification hold ups" on the busy production line. These bikes and many other things literally spat out of the factory doors.
Hope rod grading ink stamp is visible, then can be difficult to see sometimes.

That make sense John. I was not intending to remove the conrods, but be silly not have a look at the crank.. I have the valves out, usual cruddy exhaust valve seats. The odd gloop around the base of one of the exhaust studs is odd. Tries to heat out the good studs without success, even using my chinese made inductive heater . I probably need to heat it longer to break any loctite. Valve stems will be measured tomorrow, then that is it for a while until the tools are ordered. Looks as though one cylinder had been running rich for a while, just glad I decided not to sell my Gunsens Gastester. Never thought I would have use for that , as they say, never get rid of anything.. Here are some photos bob

John, my heated pants (Keis) came today. Lovely quality, even has connections for heated socks built in . Wiring sorted out, bike started, switched them on and "roasted chestnuts" very quickly come to mind....... I need to visit my sister in Berkshire for a day soon, so a nice toasty 300 mile return trip to look forward to. Good job I got the large size for my lardy arse. bob

Got back from Reading late last night on my 1200rt. The Keis heated pants kept my legs and thighs warm, albeit on the lowest setting, as it was not as cold as it has been. But.. So nice...
I had the heated jacket plugged in, but not switched... although I forgot to unplug them ( twice) ,when I got off the bike.. ping..ping doh....
Thank you buster for the heads up about using cable ties to keep the gearsets together. Good idea.
I was going to ask about reusing the clutch nut..
When I rebuilt my K100 , I downloaded realms of exploded diagrams from BMW OE parts catalogue so useful.
Anyway..
The barrels came away easily, fortunately.
The special tools arrived today , so I have now removed the flywheel and clutch basket. Both the chamfered nut and washer were fitted correctly.
My impact driver removed the coil screws , they were really tight .
I will borrow my neighbours workmate to hold the unit when I remove the bottom casing, mine got left in my old garage when I moved " up Norf" .
The add photo feature is not working for me, , if I use the add attachment, it tells me the file size is too big, will try again tomorrow.

It might be my lap top. The hard drive is ten years old, and is very slow to boot up. I see the green file image sometimes instead of the photograph.

All seems ok again this morning. As I remove bits I will photo them. here are some from yesterday. I measured the pick up gap on the flywheel before I removed it. Since the bike has done 43k I need to measure the clutch for wear. Bob

On a different note, found this lurking at the back of my bench behind the motor. Cannot remember removing it from the bike, but it does look familiar. Anyone ? looks like the kickstart collar

spot on sandy, last component on when assembling the kickstart shaft
worth noting the inner components and their order on the kickstart shaft (taking a pic is a good idea) as the haynes manual is, as far as I can make out, completely wrong.
the broken front mount is fairly common, good news is theres plenty of lower casings out there (250 or 400) but steer clear of automatics and 450 models.

Thanks sandy, I took photos of bits as they came out, must have missed that one. I find the Haynes manuals not that good.
Buster, how does the lower case get that type of damage, seems odd.
Wil need a better one .
Thanks guys.

the engine mounting bolts seize in and getting them out can be almost impossible

This happened today. My new to me quality impact driver set is made of cheese.
I presume the two screws are peened on the plate to keep the bearing in situ ? What seems to be the best method to remove these. Better impact set and heat? or Swear, drink more beer and swear some more. Are they JIS screws, and if so, is there a set of hardened JIS impact drivers any where. I can flatten the center of the broken impact head, and drill the bits out. If I can find a spare bottom case with the plate in situ, I will leave it, providing the shaft behind will lift out when I split the cases. There is this on flea bay but has the bottom engine bolt in situ, maybe I can bolt the empty cases together, bolt back in the frame, and use the frame hole to guide a drill to remove the bolt. Are the frame bolts hardened? www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2380057.m570.l1313&_nkw=cb250n+bottom+engine+case&_sacat=0I will put an advert on here any way, so if anyone has one they do not need. Thanks buster, I was hoping to be able to leave the plate in, although I have not ridden the bike, the selector mechanism seems free.
I will use your link and purchase a new kit. My last one took a beating but never broke, unfortunately it got lost in a house move and I cannot remember the brand.
This one that broke was Hilka, made from their finest cheese..
Do you think it is possible to drill out the lower rear bolt if I get that casing on my ebay link.
Thanks again Bob

that casing looks to have exactly the same issue as yours had, I'd guess its easier to drill out off the bike?. on a separate note that could be a good buy as it looks to have the main shells still in it.
lots of heat with something like MAPP gas might get that bolt out, I'd say take your time and it will come eventually
