From memory, this is the first time I have synchronsied (balanced) carbs myself. Ahead of doing it, I have been back to youtube to check something out, this video in particular. Why? Because it seems there has always been a bit of doubt about the reliability of these cheaper gauges. I think if both (in my case) are tested on one vaccum to check they are reading the same then that is all that is needed to worry about. Going to get on and finally do mine tomorrow. This video has helped, I must admit, just need to grab a T Piece tomorrow from the local motor factor. Balance the carbs then swap the gauges to the opposite cylinder - that will give you a good indication

Took her out for a 30 min test ride earlier and is now running spot on. Just for the record, I did look into continuing the Bonnie Scrambler theme that someone had half attempted when I got the bike....but alas not to be, mainly because of the lack of availability of a high rise exhaust system for the carburettor models, I researched it but quickly understood it was not a direction I could realistically take on this one. So without stretching this one out any further......that's it......it's what they call 'a wrap'. As ever, thanks to all who came with me on this one. Keep the faith.

looking good Nick, how did you find the vacuum gauges to use?

A ball bearing bench balancing will get the butterflies reasonably close.
Those cheapo vacuum gauges are a bit better than by ear, you get what you pay for.
Tubing and anti flutter valves, think aquarium shop.

looking good Nick, how did you find the vacuum gauges to use? Very easy Paul. I did what I said I'd do (and was suggested by a few folks on you tube) and checked both gauges were accurate off just the one vacuum first and they were spot on with no screw adjustment necessary. Brit Pete also suggested a very credible method of checking the integrity of the gauges.
