I HURTED ME FINGER! that bloody circlip in the master cylinder, I was just freeing it off when the screwdriver I was pushing the plunger down with slipped and I then trapped my finger in the gap with one end of the circlip pliers and yes it still hurts, it is at least in bits now though and apart from 40 odd years of gunge and crap it seems perfectly usable, especially now its all clean. caliper was a different story, someones had a go at rebuilding it, they didnt bother to clear the crud that was blocking the bleed nipple or clean the seal seat out or indeed fit boots to the floating bolts (wonder if I'v got any? might have) still at least it saves me the cost of a rebuild kit also over the last couple of evenings I'v been sorting the wiring so now I have a neutral light in the conventional place, high beam and illuminated tacho, oh and the oil lights working too (not properly tested yet as theres no oil in the motor yet)

I thought the exhaust was going to be a pig of a job, mainly due to the pattern collector box and silencers, the collector wasnt even bolted on when I got the bike so I'm guessing someone had a fight with it. truth is it all went together really easily, I loosely put the bolts in the collector first, then jiggled the headers in and put the nuts on the manifold loose, then jiggled the silencers in and once I was happy tightened everything up, job sorted then a quick swearing session with the carbs and they are in too the 'pull' throttle cable appears to be over length, hence the loose cable tie, works ok though and doesnt foul anything so I'll probably leave it be for now. jobs left to do, clutch cable, front brake and fill it up with oil and then fingers crossed I should be in business

last few bits (including the occasional bodge, see speedo cable guide bracket ) brakes all back together, levers not quite as firm as I'd like (yet) but its getting there and then the clutch bracket turned up this afternoon, so on with a handy nighthawk cable just about got enough adjustment (and it seems to be working, pushed it forward in first with the lever in) the switchgears a bit of a poser, I think I'm going to leave the 'handbrake' type lever (locking doobery removed) as the switches themselves are so nice scary bit tomorrow, firing her up, hopefully

so tank back on, gently tap the float bowls with a couple of plastic handled screwdrivers as they are filling up (no leaks, phew) and then disconnect the HT leads and put a couple of old plugs in. main reason for this is someone has cut the wiring off for the handlebar stop switch. then press starter motor button and erm, nothing, bugger . so reverting (temporarily) to thugs tricks I shorted the terminals on the starter solenoid, good spark on both plugs and built some oil pressure (light working fine) then plug caps back on but the battery was a little tired by this point so out with the good old kicksart and she popped into life third kick. eyes everywhere at this point, looking for oil leaks, listening for nasty noises and watching the exhausts for excessive smoke also keep feeling the headers as they should warm evenly. happy to report all seems good, so jumped on and rode it round the yard in first gear (its not very comfortable without a seat). then stopped it and topped the oil up to the correct level. although I have a love for kickstarts I really wanted the starter to work off the button and I suspected it was my messing about trying to get the neutral light and main beam light working that had caused the problem. I was right, only myself to blame, anyway after a bit of head scratching and another horrendous bodge (yes the bared off wire is just trapped in the earth connector) I got the starter button working again (light green/red wire) I will make a proper soldered connection at some point, honest
