collets not anywhere in the cylinder head then? No š¤·āāļø damn, thats a shame is there any evidence of the cam chain getting a bit mangled? fingers crossed that its not. if they have found their way into the bottom of the motor they might retrieve easily if you can wiggle a magnet around at the bottom of the sump, draining the oil would probably help pull them down there

To wiggle my magnet in the bottom of the sump I assume access is via the clutch side of the crankcase?

Should all else fail I have two options. 1) I will check I have all my immigration stamps in my passport and up to date jabs. Then come down and assist you to remove the engine, drop the sump off, be completely certain all is clear, then put it all back. A couple of hours, some coffee and perhaps a slice of that cake should cover it ! 2) Wait until about 10.00PM and with all the lights out, sneak up on the bastard in the dark !

Option 1 is a very generous offer sir and you are a credit to what this forum is all about š, I will do a bit more tinkering and magnet fishing the weekend and keep you informed. Tbh I really hope it doesnāt end up with an engine out job š¢ so fingers crossed I have a good weekend fishing.

So my fishing didnāt go well as I couldnāt find and collets with my magnet, so unfortunately to be safe I will have to strip the engine š¢. So after a few phone calls to duffer for moral support and guidance the strip down took place.

The engine is a lot lighter to remove out of the frame with no head, clutch and generator. So on to the bench and split the engine. Engine split and guess what? No f*****g collets to be found š”.

Great opportunity to clean up that sludgy sump. If you can peel yourself away from moto go practice....Honestly, couldn't get him to work. Leyland engineers....how did it ever go wrong... Something in the water down there ?

I'm liking your work Carl, nice sensible methodical approach, oil pump drive bolt in and safe, clutch nut/slider etc all stored safely, the right way to do it in my opinion. shame it didnt turn the collets up (I wonder where the hell they got to?) but at least you have peace of mind. if its a keeper I'd check the balance chain adjusters working properly (its really good to see how it works to understand the adjustment if you have to 'help' one along a bit) I'd also change that thin inner oil seal on the gearbox output shaft.
