at least on the 250 the stator is viable to recondition if its no good
will this be a full engine strip down?

I was just going to do the top end originally, but David silver had a full gasket set and a full seal set for not too much, so seemed sensible to have a go at the bottom end as well.

I'd say wise choice with a 250, the 400's/450's cranks rarely seem to suffer, the 250's though can be a different story. happily they sold these bikes by the thousand (despite the journo's of the day) and there are good ones out there

Good call with the full strip down . For peace of mind , even if it's just to clean the oil strainer

First job of the day was to check on my rear brake pedal which spent the night immersed in harpic toilet cleaner. After a quick rinse you can see the before and after... The harpic holds the rust particles in the liquid, so it is important to wash them off.

Over the weekend, I have managed to get another fuel tank, I have cleaned out the airbox and revitalised the plastic with atf. Here is a kind of before and after shot. Then I had a go at nickel plating the three screws that hold the airbox cover on.

New toy has just arrived from amazon. Now ill be able to dismantle the head after numbering all the valves. Is it best to keep the springs and collets with their respective valves or shouldn't it matter?

in theory it shouldnt matter but I'm a fussy bugger that way, so I bag them up and label them so everything goes back in the same place. probably more important to ensure the springs are the right way up and the collets are properly seated

A quick picture update of the new fuel tank and a few more nickel plated bits and I've now got the dead tree edition of the haynes manual.

Work is over for another day, so I thought I'd use the new toy to get the valves out of the head. After a quick tap with a wooden mallet to free the springs up, the new toy got them out without issue. The second valve from the left (inner valve on the right cylinder) was stuck, but some wd40 and a few gentle taps to and fro with the wooden mallet and it was out. The bolts holding the carburettor inlets on are a bit stuck though, so a quick soak in wd40 and I'll see if they want to move tomorrow.

I've been quite busy this weekend and have stripped down the engine which seems fine inside. I haven't got any pictures of that as it took a while as I kept on having discussions with the haynes manual asking it what it was talking about. As the engine is in bits, I thought I might as well clean the engine cases. I've got some gunk on order from amazon as most of the engine is thick with greasy dirt. The two side panels weren't as bad though, so I've been polishing them. Before shot. During shot (as I haven't finished yet). It doesn't look particularly shiny in the picture, but you can see the reflection of my phone in it.
