I've been working on a few things this weekend, so he's the update...
I was originally going to put the engine back together, but thought I'd test the starter motor first and found it to be dead. I tried taking it apart, but couldn't get the long bolts out, so I took it round to my local mechanic who can usually get bolts out quite well.
So due to starter motor issues, I thought I'd have a go at the battery box as it was looking a bit tatty.
After a quick blast of the parkside sandblasting gun, I set about welding it up. I haven't got any decent pictures from after welding as it came out blurry, but one useful tip I discovered was not to put too much weld in an area I can't get to with the angle grinder as the dremel takes ages to do the same job.
Next up was the turn of the collector box as I was inspired by comstar's collector box thread.
Here's the before pic.
It looks a little short as I cut one bit off to get the exhaust system off before I knew the collector box is the hardest bit to replace and the other bit fell off on the bike due to rust.
So here is the welded up picture.
It has since had some paint.
Since I was doing the collector box, I thought I might as well tart the exhaust pipes up a bit...
For some reason, yet again, I don't have a picture of the after shot. They're a lot shinier, but still have some rust where the chrome has gone, but haven't actually got holes yet, so they'll do for now.
While all this was going on, my mechanic phoned up to say he'd got the two bolts on the starter motor undone, so I went to collect.
I took the two bolts out and took out the rotor. Nice pic with a wire brush covering up my address on the amazon envelope...
It took my impact screwdriver with the larger JIS bit to get the four screws on the outside of the barrel undone as the windings and the bolt where the power goes in had parted company, so the windings needed to come out to avoid damage while I tried to get the nut off the end of the power bolt. The nut was rusted on, so I had to cut it down the side with a dremel and then finish off with a hammer and old screwdriver to get it off, then a die to clean up the threads of the bolt. I'll have to have a look to see what exactly goes on the power bolt in terms of insulators etc as whatever was once there had disintegrated.
I finished up the day with another polishing session of one of the end caps from the starter motor and one of the exhaust clamps. They're not immensely shiny, but are better than the other end cap which hasn't been done yet. Just noticed the exhaust clamp that has been polished is out of shot...
