Good evening all, for a while now, I have been on the lookout for a 1980 CB250N Superdream in silver When I was young (and stupid), I had a Yamaha RD125LC, and my father had a 1980 V reg, CB250N Superdream, in the fastest Silver, we used to go out at weekends for a ride together Now that I'm older (and just as stupid ) I decided to try and find the same model that my father had Various websites, and online auctions later, I found one on the Mathewsons auctions site, waited patiently for the Lot to start, opening bid was £700, I had the next bid at £800, with no more bids after, so, £800 plus fees, I now find myself the proud owner of this (pics from Mathewsons).... The bike was collected by my brother, with father tagging along for the ride, and brought back to my father's house, he has a very large garage that I can use The following weekend, I went up there to see the bike for the first time, and, was reasonably happy with my purchase From first glance.... Front tyre flat No indicators Side panels held on with a bungee Paintwork a little faded No power for the electrics So, a short push in the garage towards the compressor, sorted the flat tyre, or so I thought Removed the bungee cord and side panels, battery completely FUBAR'd, as can be seen in the oic below, there is no acid whatsoever in the battery, also, the main battery positive lead was nowhere to be seen, time for a bit of thinking, to check if the engine turns over or not, tried putting it in gear and bump starting, no joy, tried in gear and spinning the rear wheel by hand, no joy, removed the spark plugs and tried again, still no joy If at first you don't succeed, cheat 🤣 Spare 12v car battery, jump leads, negative to negative, positive battery directly to main positive on starter motor, result, engine spins freely Next on the list, remove thecrest of the panels and tank, to get a better look at the frame and wiring loom....

On scanning the photos the Chrome work looks fairly OK and overall I have seen people pay a lot more for far worse bikes
I would be surprised if a carb clean, fresh petrol and checking the electrics it does not fire up
Still think it was a good buy

Went up again on Boxing Day, this was when I found out that the front tyre was not holding air, more air in, more air out, with no visible or audible signs of punctures or leaks Didn't do really anything, apart from put air in the front tyre again Some parts were ordered, Haynes manual ordered, all received in good order Went up again today, armed with the missing wiring and the Haynes manual Fitted the battery cable, pinched the 12v car battery and jump leads, connected car battery to bike leads, ignition on, we have power, headlights, tail lights, neutral light, oil pressure light, all on, now for the moment of truth, does it turn over on the button? Won't let me upload the video Yes, it turns over from the button So, we have ignition, next, check spark at plugs, we have good spark, happy days, we have fuel in the tank, so, plugs back in, try and start it No start Tried a few times, no start Sod it, drain the tank, get some fresh go go juice After a few attempts with fresh petrol, it coughed and spluttered in to life So, now, it lives, more parts can be ordered List so far..... Battery Indicators x4 Replacement side panels, lugs missing from both sides Possible brake master cylinder rebuild kit Panels and tank resprayed, with new decals

On another note, I found the cause of the air loss in the front tyre
More air today, more air loss today, more air again, then went to put the valve cap back on, that was when I heard the leak
New valve core fitted, still leaks 🤬
Front wheel off, being taken to a tyre fitter to hopefully get it sorted

thats looking like a really good buy, looks fairly original to me but I'm no expert in that area, are those fork gaiters hiding any horrors?

thats looking like a really good buy, looks fairly original to me but I'm no expert in that area, are those fork gaiters hiding any horrors? Not got that far yet 🤣 My first priority is making sure that it starts, which it does, it runs as rough as a badgers backside though, but, it runs The majority of the chromework is very good, but, the front mudguard and the grab rails need re-chroming I do have a growing parts list, now it runs, I can make a start on getting the required items to get it back where it belongs

Been up to the bike again today, bit of a productive day with the voltmeter
Brake lights from the front brake lever not working, switch found, no wires connected to it, located some wires, connected them, bit sloppy, but, correct wires, and now working, tweeked the terminals a little, to make a tighter fit, all good
Indicator wires, for some reason, it appears that the wires for the front have been routed to the rear, will have to recheck that when I get the new indicators fitted, as there were no indicators on the bike when I bought it
Horn wiring checked, all good, need a new horn, not so good
Exhaust blowing from the manifold and the joint between the downpipe and the collector box, on both sides, new gaskets ordered, both downpipes removed, ready to try and clean them up a bit
Tachometer not working, removed the cable from the tachometer, cranked the engine, cable not rotating, removed the cable from the engine casing, cranked the engine again, cable drive key was rotating, pulled the cable out of the sleeve, well, half of it anyway 🤣
Tested the tachometer with an electric drill, with the top half of the cable, seems to work, albeit, a little sticky
Read another thread on here that someone had a similar issue, and the sprayed a touch of WD40 in from the rear, will try that next time
Had a quick look under the front fork gaiters, the tubes look pretty good, with a very faint misting on them, will possibly get the front forks resealed at some point
Unfortunately, due to the location of the bike, I only have a limited amount of time at weekends to get it sorted
When I got home from the bike today, I have ordered a number of parts, some from David Silver, the rest, which were not listed on DS website, I have ordered from an eBay seller specialising in SD parts
I won't be going to the bike again until the parts arrive

Took the downpipes off to inspect the gaskets, and decided to try and give them a clean up Upon closer inspection, I'm thinking new headers are a better choice Looking on the tinterweb, M&P have a set at around £57 for the pair, on their bay of fleas page, they'll do for now

The battery and horn both came from Halfrauds
Battery £47 Horn £6.99
Total £53.99
Handed him my Halfrauds Trade Card
New total £43.26
They do the Motoring Club discount card, they asked me if I wanted to join the scheme, which is a subscription based scheme, upon producing my Trade Card, they decided not to pursue the Motoring Club card 🤣

Been up to the Superdream again today, got a few more jobs ticked off of the list Horn, fitted and working 👍 Front Wheel refitted after the inner tube was replaced, caliper bolted back on, and brakes bled through, although, I think I need to spend a bit more time doing them, they fealt a bit spongy, probably still some air in the system New exhaust headers fitted, real PITA to get both ends in the right place at the same time, and to keep the copper manifold gaskets in the correct place New battery fitted, managed to pull the terminal end off the positive lead, 10 mins later, with the assistance of a Vice, good as new Removed the clocks, squirted a little WD40 in to the rear of the tachometer clock, it seemed a little sticky when I last checked it Whilst the clocks were off, I decided to check all the small bulbs within the unit, glad I checked, need a couple of new bulbs, will probably replace them all at the same time Test fitted the new side panels, with the rest of the panels, look OK, apart from they are in black plastic Spent far too much time trying to fit one of the rear indicators, cheated in the end, removed the grab rail, back to the aforementioned vice, still struggled to fit it, ended up grinding some off the end of the tube that goes through the mounting bracket Moment of truth, does it move under its own power Now, all the panels have been removed again, the tank drained, seat pad removed, all ready for going to the paint shop tomorrow Still got the fun of trying to fit the remaining indicators, and various other little jobs, sorting wiring, getting things working Slowly, but surely, it's getting there
