I know it's a waste of my time putting the bodywork on, but I needed some motivation for the final push. I'm waiting for a few parts to be delivered into the new year, so a bit stuck for now. the two exhaust collars need a bit of a clean and polish, then fit the exhaust properly and I could attempt a start.

Excellent work. It does feel good to put it together, even if there is still work to do. You can get a bit obsessed on certain details when anyone else will just see you have a great bike. The paint work looks smart. Self done or sent away ?

Carl, the horn was another example of me wasting my time (should have checked it worked first). luckily I have another 2 which I have tested.
Duffer, the bodywork is what came with the bike, it's far from your standard but it did polish up rather well. not bad for at least 30 years old. there were a couple of chips on the tank which revealed that it was originally blue, touched up with Honda blade silver, seems a perfect match. the lacquer is peeling a bit under the A of Honda if you look closely.

Even more impressive. T Cut can work wonders, and you have the originality.

Thanks everyone for the encouragement, that's just what I needed. Bodywork is now back off and the small jobs continue Seat catches painted and fitted Tax disc fitted (slightly out of date, Oct 83) another horn fitted, functions correctly this time, although it wouldn't scare a cat (did make my Labrador bark though). split pins fitted to the footpegs (thanks to reading Duffer's thread) I completely forgot about them, could have caused more than a red face. I bought new pins, but the old ones cleaned up so well, I left them. I think I might have got the rear pegs mixed up, the split pin should logically be at the bottom so the pin can't fall out. I'll swap them round today.

This is just like mine. Is it a T or V reg?

Karen, It's a T reg, May 1979. Slowly receiving the bits I ordered before Xmas, so making progress. Today - Indicators fitted and functioning Headlight fitted rear brake switch and spring fitted Exhaust system fitted properly (I hope) with all gaskets / seals ( waiting on nuts from silvers for the head studs) New shiny chromed grab rails fitted. the grotty heatshields will be going for chroming, I have 2 new ones but have misplaced one of them. looks near ready to go, but there are still loads of things to do. Chain, front sprocket, gear linkage, front brake, carb drain tubes, engine breather tube, clutch cable, tacho cable, to name just a few. aiming for the end of the month to complete, but as long as its finished in time for the nice weather I'll be happy. and due to a break in the Siberian weather, I managed to get the garage door open. It does have a right hand side. All I can see is the MASSIVE chip in the paint on the tank.

Today I got to the point where I could safely press the start button. Hoping for the same result as duffer's last bike, I pressed the start button. Engine turns over great, oil pressure light went out, but not firing up. whipped the plugs out, both plugs bone dry. Good spark at both plugs. checked both float bowls were getting fuel, they are. no leaks or overflow. Tried starting with choke on/off, throttle open/closed, not even a hint of combustion. I think I know what I need to do now, but any suggestions welcome before I swap the carbs.
